Doug's right, don't worry. No downlinked data seems to be making it to the tracking site, but normal new sequences are showing up, which they wouldn't be scheduling if anything was wrong. |

I don't think it's Exploratorium that's down, no images have shown up at JPL or (more importantly) on the tracking site either. |

Nevertheless, if I were at Meridiani I'd scamper up to that high ground for a look around - it's probably the best view for km's (Endurance might even be visible from there). I've been thinking the same thing - the beacon looks like the place to be. I still think were more than likely going to head to the closest point on the rim but the fact that they are taking a new set of drive direction pancams tosol is intriguing. After all we already have drive direction pancams from (very nearly) this position. It may take an extra sol or two but I would love it if we headed for the beacon. And in other news: Looks like I was wrong, they *are* going to RAT Cape Faraday. It'll be interesting to see how well that turns out. Should be an interesting downlink (if we get one tosol!) in a few hours. |

I think all VSE stuff relating to Mars has been 'postponed indefinitely' now, so there's nothing in NASA's budget for precursors etc. Before it was dropped a few interesting things were published - try googling for them. Here is a good pdf from 18 months ago on the subject. James |

Yeah, that must be the target. But is likely to be a loose piece of evaporite in my opinion, look at the much larger bit that Oppy drove over here (the new target (Cape Faraday) is on the far left, just above the wheel in that image) btw: MB scheduled for 940 to complete the IDD set |

Whats gone wrong and where? Restricted sols and DSN congestion - we've only mentioned a few times Are those the only problems though? I was under the impression that we had had a drive fault as well. Hence why we have seen no IDD activity so far. Restricted sols and DSN problem of course make recovery from any faults very time consuming. SOL 939 showed up at the PC tracking site to be a SOL with RAT, APXS and MI stuff I still find it hard to beleve anything infront of the rover can be RATed - maybe just a brushing? |

Even more?... ...And may I ask why?... Oops, sorry, I was confusing you with TomaB. I thought this was your post. That'll teach me for trusting my memory. -- Tesheiner: If there was any more time to uplink then we'd have be out of restricted sols, right? James |

Well we're not sure that RATing was on the cards are we? So maybe the last drive was OK - it just seems to me like quite an odd target to have driven too. It is odd that the drive abort wasn't mentioned in the latest update, normally that kind of thing is included. You can infer it however as they say: QUOTE Sol 931: Opportunity bumped to a rover arm target at Emma Dean But then only remote sensing is done for several sols before Oppy moved again. What I also find odd about the aborted drive is that Oppy still seemed to do the turn in place to line up for UHF passes. I was under the impression that when a drive aborted that was it, drive over, wait for further instuctions. The drives that have been done look fine - it's not slippage and all the wheels seem to be working as normal. I'll be interesting to see what is done on 938 - there is just more remote sensing on the tracking site at the moment (Ustrax will be pleased |

Still no grinding or APXS/MB/MI stuff has showed up at the PC site. They need at least a few days to do a grind and use the MI and the other spectrometers. Well if they were intending to do some grinding then they are in the wrong place again. (another aborted drive?) I'm pretty sure none of the rocks infront of Oppy now are grindable. |

I think that's beacause at JPL the '##' are replaced with '__' so MMB thinks they are different images. You update from Exporatorium then a few hours later when the same images appear at JPL you get them again. |

Only a couple of weeks to the launch and we don't have a thread for this yet! Launch date: 2006 September 23 (JST) (22nd in Europe/Americas) Website (in english): http://solar-b.nao.ac.jp/index_e.shtml Looks like they are going to have quite a nice data archive system (with MPEG-2 movies) - I wonder how long we'll have to wait for the data? Wishing Japan a bit more luck with this mission! |

The Space Shuttle Atlantis is up and safe. What a great week to come. The Shuttle joins the International Space Station and Oppy gets to Victoria. Time to celebrate. Party at Jamescanvin place I think we'd be better off celebrating just down the road at Astro0's place. |

I think we all know where the Beacon is by now don't we? Although to be fair to the far rimmers now we *can* see the far rim through a gap in the near rim James |

Opps, I just missed your previous post. Don't worry, when I did (almost exactly) what you posted, I got so confused over the differences between the results from using different MOC images that I decided not to post it. So you didn't miss that! As long as all all those that were on the 'beacon on the far rim' team don't miss the fact that it was a 'near rimmer' that first spotted a *real* far rim beacon! |

fredk, I think if the second man was on that section 230m away he would be peaking out from behind the other side of the right hillock (Look at Tesheiner's sight lines). Here's where I think he is standing in your image. |

While we are waiting for the final steps towards Victoria I did the following exercise trying to identify two far rim features (A and Comparing this identification with Pando's, there is a difference of just 2 degrees in the absolute heading of the feature I identified as B and the one identified by him (slightly to the NE). The problem is that if I rotate the polar projection and the heading lines by those 2 degrees counter-clockwise, the near rim features I used as reference don't match (specially the one to the right of We should know the "ground truth" in few days, hopefully after only one driving sol, but meanwhile I would like to know your comments. I did the same, and got the same answer as you. But when I identified that feature on the 'old' victoria image (the one Pando just credited) I got the the same position as Pando. EDIT: Actually, going back thru the messages for past few days, I would also like to credit jamescanvin who correctly identified it in this post very early after the images were down (which I missed while fiddling with the images myself). It is hard keeping up with all this speculation at the moment isn't it! James |

Depressing possibility: If the fuel cell fails on-orbit prior to ISS rendezvous, would that mean that the truss assy would have to be jettisoned to do a safe landing in accordance with NASA's flight rules? No. From Spaceflightnow: QUOTE If a minimum-duration flight was declared early, the astronauts would still be able to dock with the station, attach the new solar array and stage at least one spacewalk to plug it into the station's power and cooling systems. After that, the crew would be ordered home early. But Hale said he believed the odds of that, while not zero, were acceptably low. |

Hi Stu, I think the map/key would be better if it was moved to the 'left'. As it is now I think that numbers 7 oward are going to be obscured by closer stuff on the SW rim, but loads of features further around than '1' are going to be visible. I think the glimpses we are getting even now, extend from Sofi to quite away off the left edge of your diagram. James |

I think the near rim slopes down and away. Any sand would also migrate downward leaving the evaporite exposed. I think that could be the near rim. Barring that I'll settle for the far rim, but it's certainly not the interior dunes. Sure there are going to be some spectacular evaporite sections on the near rim. Problem is, todays drive only changes our veiwing angle of the near rim by (rough calculation) 0.04 degrees! I don't see how that much new near rim terrain could have been revealed (nothing on the inside with a gradent any more than ~1 degree!). On the far side however, todays drive could have revealed 30-40cm* of bright evaporite cliff. So that could mean we're only seeing the top 1/100th of the far cliffs so far! This view is going to be so awsome. |
