The aft looking SRB view is awesome as well - looking down on the pad with the smoke plume and it's shadow from near SRB sep, wow!

EDIT: here's a still:

Yeah, looks aborted to me. But I'm still amazed at how far they tried to drive, given how dangerous this ripple looked!

Should be able to back out in one sol though I guess.

Beagle was smaller than I'd expected (spanning about the same as Alpha, from this distance).

Note that only about 1/3 of Beagle is visible in the 871 image (look at the 870 images). There is a LOT more of Beagle Crater off the edge of the mosaic than your ellipse implies.

huh.gif Fixed it. Not the first time I've made that mistake.

Yup, you made it on the image itself as well. laugh.gif

And here is the revised panorama, with the craters outlined and labeled in green.

You see, that's another problem with naming the crater Beagle - it's just one letter from being confused with Eagle. wink.gif

It doesn't appear that we'll see a move on 872.

No, looks like it's a spring cleaning sol!

There was no motion back at the end of May - that was just speculation to explain the site number change.

There has been no "exercise" of Spirits mobility system since she arrived at Low Ridge on Sol 805. (Hey coming upon a full primary mission at Low Ridge now! How time flys.)

I have no idea if the engineers think that exercise will be needed over winter - good question.

Which crater? The features toward the right of that image are from one of the small craters on Victoria's Ejecta blanket arn't they?

I was very surprised that there is still a bright beacon in the L7/R1 images (considering how dark the outcrop materal is at this wavelength) when I first saw that.

But just an (tantalizingly positioned) raw image artifact I guess.

Nice one James. You know what's brilliant - to see how you've come on from your first mosaics, to something like that...utterly astounding

Yeah, there is quite a learning curve to all this! For almost every mosaic I end up changing some aspect of the processing, rewrite a few lines of code etc. I'm not sure I really realised what I was getting into when I first started casually playing with the images late last year.

Sol 864 tracking data is up - looks like a ~42m drive - waiting for images...

--

Hmm, doesn't look like we've had any images in over 24 hours - I hope Exploratorium isn't down again.

Here is the position for 864 from just the tracking data then.

Attached Image

(I thought I'd take this one while Tesh gets back up to speed.)

QUOTE (RNeuhaus @ Jun 29 2006, 08:25 AM) *
The guess sol 684 route, there are 3 possibilities:

I would be almost certain that the next waypoint will be that outcrop directly south - we should make it on the next drive or the one after.

QUOTE (RNeuhaus @ Jun 29 2006, 08:25 AM) *
The sol 684 will be a long drive, I think it so since there are many front and rear haz camera. The new route seems to be around 162 degree (South East):

Note that every entry appears three times in this list so it's not as many as it appears. I don't agree that the number of hazcam shots programmed has any relevence to the drive distance - all the driving images (autonav/slip detection) that may indicate distance are commanded by the fight software and don't appear on the tracking database beforehand.

About the 162 degrees - that is the pointing direction of the centre image in the 5 frame navcam pan taken *after* the drive I don't think it tells us anything about the upcoming drive direction. It *may* indicate the general dirction of the drive after the upcoming one - and indeed, it is pointed toward Beagle smile.gif.

I've been doing some more work on this and I think I can identify some features:

Attached Image

Which changes the Sol 862 (and retrospectively Sol 860) positions quite a bit.

Attached Image

Good news is, this puts us a bit closer to Corner Crater than before smile.gif

James

----

EDIT: Replaced with another refinement.

If this new position is correct then I think the sol 857 position is probably a bit off (I think Tesheiner just took the tracking value for that one) there is no way the sol 860 drive was as long as it appears now.
