Yup - I agree with your position on the 857 image but converting that to a position on the route map is not so easy as neather of the features you mention can be seen - or have you spotted something I haven't? |

Here's where I think we are on sol 860 - based on the tracking data, there aren't many 'islands' in sight to get a fix on at the moment. James |

But what you're saying is precisely what I'm intending to do... Seameless printed panoramas applied to a background curved to match as nearly as possible the FOV, maybe I didn't express well... Oh good, I obviously read too much into your first diagram! Should be spectacular. James |

Latest McMurdo - 20 columns- with full resolution option this time (17Mb!) (don't worry, there are smaller versions as well) Still needs a bit of contrast matching work and the artificial sky/horizon boundary is not perfect. But this was mainly a test that I could actually make the full res version in perparation for the finished product. Cheers, James |

Thank you James. I'm thinking about, with larger panoramas, making three panels, each one of them one 1mt and adjust in a way like the original location, something like this: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b14/ustrax3/anjc1.jpg Do you think it will work live? If possible I would print the whole thing as one and then mount it on a curved (or angled) background. I would be worried that by printing three seperate panels your eye may be drawn to the seams and make the anaglyph harder to view. When you say 'like the origonal location' I guess you mean angled to reproduce the fov of the image. Your are aware that that image is already 200+ degrees around, so you'd need to wrap it around a lot more than your picture implies? While viewing the full 360 from inside a cylinder would be very cool I'm not sure how well it'd work in practice, I find it easier to view if you 'step back a bit', which wouldn't be possible in this case. I guess you can always test what you can get way with once its printed. James |

Edited: This ones from jamescanvin please me... http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...ost&p=59233 Feel free to use either of mine* - I'll be making a bigger version of the McMurdo one once all the data is taken. And maybe an updated version with the most recent data in a few days. With mine, be aware that if you print them too large the L/R offset on the horizon could become quite big and I suspect that it is impossible to view anaglyphs unless the offset is less than the seperation between your eyes. *On one condition: you take and send some pics of the event. Cheers, James |

This I can see. Hurrah! At a variety of resolutions I succeed. Even at the maximum, if I start at the bottom and traverse gradually upward, I keep the 3D effect for at least half the image height. When I start to lose it, I dash back down to one of the prominent 'iceberg' rocks to clear my vision. Good to hear you can see it Shaka. Same with me, going back to a prominant rock if I loose it, and after a while I was able to see all the way across to McCool hill, a great view. Absolutely great anaglyph, james! ...can I take a rock for me? If you manage to grab one let us know how you did it, I've been trying all afternoon but they seem just out of reach! |

After the positive response to my McMurdo 3D colour pan, i've gone back and done the same for Gibson: I know quite a lot of you have problems viewing these and need to re-register them but after looking at this for long enough I can see the 3D across this entire single image even at the highest resolution. Try harder! Note: The pan needs to be projected in the rover frame to get it to work so no nice flat horizon. Cheers, James |

About the problems with seeing 3D with anaglyphs - as someone said, the pancam channels are too wide apart, but the real problem is with the way of generating the anaglyph. IMHO the read and blue channels should be aligned perfectly in the center of the image to make a good anaglyph. I have trouble seeing real 3d with some images posted here - I see double. But when I take those "bad" anaglyphs and do some rough align in photoshop, the results are unbelieveable - especialy with this color anaglyph from james (10x!) I think it varies from person to person, I made the colour anaglyph with the red and cyan channels aligned at the bottom as I find it really hard to see the near field in 3D otherwise. Maybe multiple versions are needed! James |

James, that's a stunning colour analglyph pan! I noticed that the impression of true colour improves as you observe it longer and longer, perhaps as your retinas fatigue to their respective colours (this is what leads to afterimages). Thanks. Your righ about the colour - it takes my brain a while to get to grips with mixing the different colour channels coming from each eye. One question - what did you use for the right green channel? Did you synthesize it? Yeah, it's basically a mix of R1 and R2. James |

I'll see what I can do Nico. Problem is that you need a colour pan from the right pancam, particularly because you are seeing both the blue and green channels through your right eye. I suspect then, that it is very important to have R1 (the only 'blue' filter on the right pancam) which not many pans have. The other option is for us all to turn our glasses round the other way, this would make much more sense given the way the pancam filters are arranged! btw: Gibson has R1 James |

Thanks Michael. --- I do find it a little tricky to view sometimes as your eyes have to focus on the near screen but the pointing of your eyes needs to be different (more parallel) than normal. What works for me is to look at a largeish rock in the middle distance and then let your eyes defocus a bit and wait for it to come. And as Shaka says it is easier with a smaller version. I may do a version without the near field and align the feaures closer together which should make things easier, and allow higher res versions to work James |

Looks like there was a small problem with positioning the right pancam filter wheel on sol 867, it's a little out of sync. Most noticeable in this one (arc across the top) but it is visible in all the R pancams taken on sol 867 |

Very nice - can't wait for the stereo views to start! Your wish is my command Bob This is the first anaglyph i've ever attempted so comments for improvement are more than welcome. The right eye pan is also far from perfect, a very preliminary attempt. But at least it *does* seem to work James |

Yeah, thanks Airbag, I know just putting the tracking data up wasn't really answering the question but I was busy and knew some fine UMSFer would do the nessesary Googling. -- I thought I'd join Horton and Ant and put another McMurdo image or two up. Latest L234567 Colour - 58 Pointings (that's 348 images) Latest L7 - 69 pointings. Projected as a full 360 pan centered in the direction not taken yet to show the gap still to be filled - we're getting there - slowly. Enjoy, James |
