Where's Tesheiner? Normally the map's updated before I've even realised a drive has happened. We had one tosol (823), a big one! I don't know the exact figure as we had a site change (70 -> 71) but at the time of the change (very near - EDIT: about 1m from the end of the drive) we had 71m on the clock! James |

Those 15.8412º are exactly 0.27mrad (ifov) x 1024; interesting. That is interesting, being in the PDS headers... I still beleve the 16.0 figure in Bell et al. 2003 is accurate though. I have made two 360 degree panoramas and in both cases I optimised for the fov: 15.9687 and 16.0816. A change to 15.84 would lead to ~3 degrees difference over 360 degrees, ~7 pixels per image, seriously messing with the stitch quality. 16.8 would be much worse of course. Still, a good question for Jim Bell, get this cleared up once and for all. Back on topic, I've been sitting on the fence across Victoria for too long... I'm going to join the nearside team. James |

James, do you think they will back-fill the many lost segments of recent photos? Of course, it's already been done. And, what do you think is causing the increase in the number of incomplete images? I'm not sure there is an increase, especially if you look back over the whole mission, things were a lot worse back in the early days IIRC. There have always been dropouts like this, don't worry! True - but any discussion that encourages them guys of the panoramic persuasion to get out and create more beautiful panoramas as seen from this very spot is well worth suffering through! Here's the latest L7 then... No full res version again, but if there was, then at 150dpi it'd be 2.1m x 85cm James |

It's going to take an awfully long time for a rock the size of Veus to cool enough to freeze CO2 I would imagine. I remember reading (a long time ago) of another idea, that would have split the CO2 atmosphere into an O2 one with a lot (and I mean a lot) of carbon dust coving the surface, although quite how that helps matters I can't remember! But anyway, why get rid of the atmosphere when it provides such a nice habitat at 50km... http://powerweb.grc.nasa.gov/pvsee/publica...ony_STAIF03.pdf James |

My, those Huguenots got around, didn't they? Yup. Small world, the Canvins were Huguenots too. We headed of to England when things got ugly, but are now scattered all over the globe as well. Canvin is thought to derive from the french "champs de vin" = "fields of wine", which I think explains a lot! James |

I've added another column to the L7 pan (that makes 8, 1/3 of the way there!) and redone the 14 frame full colour one (no missing sections and better colour) I won't bother putting the thumbnails in this time, save a bit of bandwidth. See my website. James |

And what is the magnitude of a full moon in a clear night sky? -12.7 (from google) And what is the magnitude of the Sun as seen from Sedna at aphelion ~ -11.8 According to Celestia and at Pluto? ~ -18.3 Celestia again. James |

Halfway from where? Roughly looking at the map I think were pretty much halfway between Payson and 'Corner Crater' already, pretty good progress! At this rate we should be on the apron by sol 870ish by my reckoning. Not looking good for my Victoria prediction, here's hoping that Corner Crater is be interesting enough for a primary mission length stop! James |

And here is a rough version of the 14 frames that are down (nearly) completely in L234567: Again, half & quarter resolution versions on my website (click image) This is the first time i've used the full L234567 and I've essentially mixed different filters to get RGB in a pretty random way (a little of this, a bit more of that). If anyone has any better idea of approximately what proportions of each I should be using, I'd love to here it. Cheers, James |

OK i've done a bit more work on this. Attached is an overlay of all the locations listed on the tracking site on Tesheiner's route map back to sol 775 - this covers 3 'sites' 67, 68 & 69 which are added and matched to the map seperately (it's not one continuous line) there are a couple of interesting things to note: 1) The fit to Tesheiner's route line is very good showing what we already new - what a great job he's doing I find it incredibly hard looking at all these outcrops and trying to figure out whats going on! 2) For two of the three 'sites' I had to rotate my route by around 3 degrees to get it to match with Tesheiner's map following the ground features (I'm not sure about the third). This got me thinking, MGS's orbit is inclided at about 93 degrees and so when crossing the equator at Meridiani will be traveling at 3 degrees from north/south and as it uses a 'brush broom' camera this will be the orientation of the image pixels. My question is, has that been accounted for on this map, or is north really 3 degrees away from 'up'? Which would make a lot of sense compared to what i'm getting from the data tracking data! James |
