Latest JPL update. Can anybody calculate where this Zane Grey is, 36m from our present position? Is it the black rubble pile or is it the rim proper?

The update also says

QUOTE
Sol 735 (Feb. 16, 2006): The plan for this sol includes remote sensing and a short diagnostic activity for the arm.

Lets hope nothing more has gone wrong!

And just when we thought we were leaving... sad.gif

Looks a little dark to me? (Maybe because I'm used to the stretched images.)

I think your right - although I always have a dilemma when balancing these between looking: too dark - too bright and washed out - or too high a contrast.

I've replaced the latest with a slightly adjusted one which I think looks quite nice (at least to me and on my monitor, but that's another story!)

Always appriciate the feedback on this issue.

Cheers,

Maybe, I didn't play with it much from what came out automatically.

I'll have a look.

I'm nearly done with my update of this.

Hang on...

2 Years now since Doug unleashed the MER forums on us, later becoming UMSF.

How time flys! smile.gif

Thanks once again Doug, for all your hard work in bringing all us space addicts together.

I've had a great time hanging around this place! Long may it continue.

Cheers,

Lord no!  ohmy.gif  Let's hope not, otherwise we might not get past them to see all the other good stuff.

Rather than posting several large, marked up images, I have cut a few examples of rocks that might display crossbedding.  We're going to have to see some of these closer to be sure.  Some of them may only be minor unconformities rather than crossbedding.  I've also included one example from the "what the heck is this?" category.

This is just so amazing.  I can't believe we are seeing so many brand new rock types, all in such a fantastic exposure.  I can't imagine what else we'll find as we look around.
*

Nice.

I think in your "what the heck is this" we may be looking perpendicular to the layering and that the apparent angle in the layers is not real but from the perpective.

At the moment I think I'd put everything into the "what the heck is this" catagory! tongue.gif

Very nice, always good to see Spirit in the landscape.

As for the Sol 744 images - I'm speechless ohmy.gif - We could spend months here - if only winter wasn't coming...

My attempt at the L256 Sol 743 colour pan, including the far right frame which is missing a bit of L7.

Crop of Home Plate for those that don't want to bother downloading the whole pan.

Home plate with the colour stretched to help with the speculating. smile.gif

Just noticed that there was one frame missing from the Sol 729 pan (the one with El Dorado in it) as it had a different sequence number, I think JPL is trying to confuse me! I've now added it in.

Thanks to MMB's panoramas for bringing it to my attention! smile.gif

I've seen some simulations of the data expected from STEREO and the 3D images/movies of prominences etc. are going to be awsome!

QUOTE (slinted @ Jan 31 2006, 11:21 AM)
Since this is the thread for "...and points south", it seems as good a place as any for this little chuckle.

The homepage for the Mapping and GIS Laboratory at OSU (the routemap people) currently features a link to an article published in the Columbus Dispatch back on January 3rd.  It includes some quotes from the Ron Li, the leader of the OSU mapping group, as well as 2 routemaps credited to the OSU group, showing the rovers progress up until December 22, 2005.

Imagine my surprise when I looked at the Opportunity routemap...not only did Opportunity already arrive at Victoria (which has shrunk to 200 feet wide, and is now apparantly renamed Erebus), but they have already driven partially around the rim blink.gif

And the Spirit one is no better. The insert is ok (I think) but the main map! blink.gif
