QUOTE (Tesheiner @ Jun 4 2010, 04:26 PM) *
I *think* the data on James' two posts used two different reference pointings: rover relative azimuth/heading, and absolute azimuth/heading.

Yes, sorry, I forgot that I had used rover relative last time.

And whatever happens to it, we still have Hazcams.

Of course there is also the slight concern over the RR wheel as well. unsure.gif

Some more very small motions of the PMA in tosols tracking data. And increments in the drive number indicating some commanded motion of the RR wheel I guess.

iirc, many of the actuators share control electronics (some of the wheels with some in the arm at least). I guess that the PMA shares with the right rear wheel and so these images are another diagnostic of the same problem.

Yikes indeed! Loss of a PMA actuator would be a major blow.

Just been looking at the PDT. Interesting that the mast head didn't move in either el or az - I'm assuming that there have separate actuators for each?

The good news is the PMA_diagnostic thumbnails do show some change in both el and az. smile.gif

Code from the PDT site below - last two columns are az and el respectivly.

QUOTE (Poolio @ May 28 2010, 05:14 AM) *
...and mass. With mass such a precious commodity in terms of launch and EDL criteria, adding gizmos to clear the solar panels would mean giving up something else.

I think what would have given, would have been the large multiple folding arrays - after all, with a cleaning gizmo such large arrays wouldn't have been needed to make it through the primary mission. This would have given us less power in the summer and if it failed (or plain didn't work, given how little we knew/know about the mechanics of the dust) then they would have have had a much more serious problem during winter.

I personally don't think they would be roving today if it hadn't been for the simple yet oh so effective array design that the team came up with. All hail the MER engineering team for getting us a frankly astonishing 2.255 THOUSAND sols into a 90 sol mission! wheel.gif wheel.gif wheel.gif

BTW have you had a go at those peaks beyond (to the right of) Iazu yet? That seems to be the only part of the horizon for which you haven't provided a definitive key.

No, had even less free time than usual lately! I think I may have a rare few hours at home without a toddler running around tomorrow afternoon so maybe then. smile.gif

It's taken me a while to get this finished and convince myself that it has a possibility of being right. wink.gif

Anyway, here is may attempt to match the features in Fredk's stacked image with a reprojected CTX image:

I think that right from the start MSL is going to be power limited, so I doubt much more could be archived per sol without the time delay from earth (let alone after 20 years or RTG decay!) Re-programming would be the last of your worries.

No, not expecting any ashfall, the ash is very high and disperse and should pass right on over us.

It is only a danger to aircraft at altitude, hence why the entire UK airspace is essentially closed today. ohmy.gif

Not only that, but if IIRC at about that dogleg, Oppy will be as far from Duck Bay as she was at Eagle Crater!

QUOTE (Deimos @ Mar 12 2009, 03:09 AM) *
Wikipedia knows all. But ...

VL1 was successfully commanded (to do the wrong thing) on sol 2252. It landed on sol 0, so that's 2253 sols of operations. The place that messed up the sols also messed up the Earth date (11/19, 1982, not 11/13).

Mark,

Sorry for replying to such an old post, but as Spirit and Opportunity are now closing in on the VL-1 record I have been trying to understand exactly what the record is.

While VL-1 was, as you say, given the faulty commands on sol 2252, as far as I can tell there was no response to that command and of course no subsequent response at all. At the time communications sessions were only being done approximately weekly, so as far as I can tell the last time that anything was actually heard from VL-1 was the previous DSN session back on sol 2245 (the date that most sources give for EOM)

I guess the question is: Is the end-of-mission, the day we broke it, or the day we last heard from it?

OK I ended up shifting my identifications slightly from my last post on Bopolu (getting a better fit in the process I think) and then get a nice alignment with the highest peaks on the SE-Miyamoto rim according to GM.

Back on Mars, I made a start at matching the features ngunn spotted. On sol 2181 the drive direction mosaic includes both the new feature and Boplou so aligning it with my reprojected HRSC images is fairly easy. I didn't get a chance to finish making a graphic but I got far enough to think the ID is indeed the high part of the Miyamoto rim that ngunn pointed to. cool.gif

Possible ID?

I don't have a change to check the ID but a couple of weeks ago I was actually looking for features in the pancams to match the ID you point to, thinking that there was a chance they might visible. I couldn't spot anything then, but hopefully the clearing atmosphere has changed that.

The feature is actually part of the rim of the gigantic Miyamoto Crater, whose name will be familiar to may here as one of the rejected MSL landing sites. Although that particular feature is actually much closer (just outside the landing ellipse in fact) of another rejected MSL site 'South Meridiani'

I've taken the image fredk made and tried to do some feature mapping on a reprojected HRSC image of Bopolu. I think this should be pretty close, the Google Mars 3D matches pretty well with what we see (also included) which gives me some confidence I'm in the right ballpark. smile.gif

There may be others that cover the same area, I just grabbed a few ID's off of Google Mars.

It would be good to have as accurate a map as possible to help with alignment of horizon features - fudging it may just confuse me more than I already am!

ngunn,

I don't think the distant horizon can be part of Iazu, it just doesn't stretch that far east. Also, it looks more 'hazy' than the rest of Iazu. Looking at Google Mars it does suggest that we should have an horizon about 10km (ish) beyond Endeavour in that direction.

Doug,

I'd love to have a CTX base map of the area. Not sure how much time I'll have to do any further analysis, but here are some ID's of CTX images that would cover all of Endeavour and Iazu.

P13_006135_1789_XN_01S005W
P15_006847_1770_XN_03S005W

Stu,

Rui has named everything around here hasn't he? wink.gif

OK I've been poring over these horizon images along with my retrojected orbital HRSC image and other bit and pieces from this thread + Google Mars for ages! I am now pretty confident that I have everything identified correctly (or pretty close).
