I'm happy to stand aside if we would rather have someone from another EU state - at the moment we have all four from the UK!

Another 100 sols down, time for another update to my map:

Not so much progress this time, what with being at BI for ~50 sols and only being <100m from the sol 1927 position.

I would imagine that it will be an 'as big as time allows' rather than formaly a 360. I'm sure the pancam folks are hoping that it won't be completed. wink.gif Just passing the time...

Is by any chance someone working on a high resolution color image showing the surroundings of the meteorite?

There is a 360 degree pan taken while Oppy has been parked here that is almost all down. I'll be making a version of the pan as usual. smile.gif

QUOTE (SteveM @ Aug 16 2009, 08:11 PM) *
I'm almost embarrassed to ask a nerdy question about such a beautiful image but: is the reddish color of the dust devil real, or is it an artifact based on the color wheel that happened to be up when the dust devil appeared?

It is not real - the DD was moving between frames. Here are the raw L257 images that went into it

http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p...QP2288L2M1.HTML
http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p...QP2288L5M1.HTML
http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p...QP2288L7M3.HTML

Looks like I picked it up the in the L5 (green) filter - the red (L2) and blue (L7) filters are just bright background sky at that position making it appear a reddy-pink.

Don't bother looking for evidence of the others in my image, as apart from that dust devil all of the rest of the sky is artificial. I didn't notice any others when I was selecting the area for the sky gradient, but I wasn't looking too closely. I'll dig out the colourised version of that frame when I get home after work today.

I've added a link to the QTVR made by Mike to my site.

Or direct link (warning 7.6MB):

I converted the half-res version to QTVR for myself; would you mind if I posted it, James? Or would you like it for your site?

Sure feel free to post it - or I can host it if you prefer.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I don't have much time to do this stuff anymore - 6 month old daughters take a lot of time! - so it's nice to know it's appreciated. smile.gif

And Stu, I hope you get around to reinstalling PS sometime soon. wink.gif Your regular colour and anaglyph images are much appreciated at my end.

Fred's right that is Iazu again - great view.

As to the height, Google Earth says that the peaks are 200 - 300 m above the surrounding plain.
In that image the peaks are about 10 pixels high - at roughly 40km that makes what we can see the top 100m or so.

Is there a projected path for the western route (ustrax's route was amazingly prescient, so now I'm lost).

I made a quick guess here a while back. I don't have Ustrax's gift though. wink.gif

The 'official' route hasn't been made public yet.

This is a question for the rover drivers:
What is the upper and lower limits for the 'shutter speed' (the time a picture could be taken) of the MI?

According to the Pancam technical paper, the integration time for the CCD's can be between 0 - 335 seconds in 5.12ms steps

SpaceListener, the question of 1/3 gravity has been asked (and answered) several times in this thread already, it's well worth reading the whole thread if you interested in this, however you could start with this:

http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...st&p=141396

And yes the Testbed can (and will) run with just the 5 working wheels - it wouldn't be a very useful test otherwise.

I agree ugordan, after I posted that I began to worry that it was too bright and that it should have been a crescent.

Yes, it is too small for the Sun, however it is about the right size for Phobos...

Hmmm, anyone want to check where it would have been at the time?

Apparently this isn't true - see the updates to the post Phil Plait made about this yesterday on BA.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastro...eo-tapes-found/

Besides, this is a Manned Spaceflight topic which is not discussed on UMSF.

I think a peak north of "Cook" could match (far rim wink.gif or east rim) . Any idea Rui or James ?

I think you are right, there does appear to be a faint hint of a feature 6 - 8 degrees from the north end of Cook. Measuring the angles I think it correlates to this on the HRSC image:

Attached Image

In Google Earth this does look to be the next highest feature on the east rim after Cook.
