Yes, in fact Spirit did that a lot when high motor currents first showed up on her back in the first winter.

Well I hadn't noticed the L6R1's myself. But I had noticed that we have started to get some R2's to go with the R1's again. So I can do some more colour drive direction mosaics: smile.gif

I'm looking for the strait distance to Eagle at this stage. Anybody?

That is something the Google Earth kml is good for - using the ruler I get 9.06km/5.63miles from Eagle Crater

Looks like Endeavour to me.

I agree with others here -It doesn't look that bad, we'll be out of here in no time. smile.gif

Still a few missing/corrupted bit of data from the Resolution Panorama I'll wait for those before doing the full version. I'm not sure when I'll get to do that though, so in the meantime here is my current 'draft':

Moreover, the problem gets worse in time as these spacecraft become inoperative and start to buildup as “space junk” at L2…

Space junk shouldn't start to build up as the Lissajous orbits around the L1,2 & 3 points are not perfectly stable and require significant station keeping to remain there.

The orbits are at L2 are of the order 100,000km I think, so it will be a while till there are any crowding issues. smile.gif

you will end up at a quite nasty sudden rocky patch (hidden from view from the present navcams as it slopes down at bit?) which does not look very good.

It doesn't look that bad to me - and being downhill, it shouldn't be a problem for Spirit to cross IMO.

Geert, I'm not sure that analysis shows meaningful differences in terrain. You seem to have ended up with a similar range of colours for both the terrain on top of HP and that surrounding it - something we know from ground truth to not be the case.

No, just the 2D colour: http://www.nivnac.co.uk/mer/index.php/a1366

I'll try and do a 3D version as we are heading back that way. It was only taken using one filter with the right pancam so colour 3D will be tough, but at least it is R1 (blue) so it's not impossible.

Might also be a good time to repost the full Gibson Pan:

About 7.5km from the landing site.

http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/gallery/press/s...sApollo_br2.jpg

Add maybe 1km to that from our current position.

http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/gallery/press/s...pApollo_br2.jpg

A little far for a 5 wheeled rover I'd say. rolleyes.gif

The raws for the first Resolution pan (another much larger and closer pan is currently being taken smile.gif ) are all down. Here is my version:

Nice. smile.gif

I think I'm right in thinking that the two large dark rocks on the 'corner' of HP from this viewpoint are those at 'Gibson' where Spirit first arrived on sol 746/8.

EDIT: here is an old mosaic of mine from back then, showing the rocks I'm talking about.

That's what I'm trying to tell myself as well Stu.

I'm sure whatever is chosen will seem right in few years. But right now I'm struggling to decide which is the least worst.

Indeed a beauty James! Have a doubt here, visiting your site, you make reference to Thera crater...I must be missing something here but aren't we looking in the opposite direction of it? unsure.gif

Yes your right - I was confused and in a hurry. Need more sleep...

Thanks for the complement and correction.

James

EDIT: Am I right in thinking that it is in fact, Grissom Hill?

It's not up yet. But remember that .pdf versions of the Planetary Report are put up in the members section of the society website.

Got my copy in the post yesterday - great to see UMSF in print. smile.gif

Sorry to be putting corrections on top of corrections, but I don't believe we've heard anything official about our first destination at Endeavour.

I think your right - but frankly I'd be astonished if we didn't end up on the west rim. If we're going to the twin peaks we are REALLY going the long way around. And if we are going to the FAR rim then surely we'll swing by the near rim first! rolleyes.gif

Must be one of the three, as SS says we can now see where we are going: wink.gif
QUOTE ('Steve Squyres')
We can now see our landfall on the horizon. It's far away, but we can anticipate seeing it gradually look larger and larger as we get closer to Endeavour. We had a similar experience during the early months of the mission watching the Columbia Hills get bigger in the images from Spirit as Spirit drove toward them.

QUOTE (fredk @ Mar 19 2009, 02:19 PM) *
Also, I was skeptical that we couldn't see the new piece of the west rim from Victoria, especially when we had those great views around sol 950. Looking again, I'm pretty sure it is visible,

Thanks for that. I didn't remember seeing it before (although that feature does look familiar now you post it)

Can't wait to see more and watching them get bigger and bigger. smile.gif

I think the decision to give up ploughing around here and head around the west side of HP deserves a new thread. Lets get moving!

I've split off the last few posts to The West Valley Route

Well Stu, I would argue that as we left Victoria we could see Endeavour and were heading towards it.

I think the big difference now is that we can see the west rim - the actual bit we are heading for. Back at Victoria, we could only see the north and south-east sections that are a LONG way from where we are actually going.

Here is my estimate of what we are seeing in the Sol 1820 drive direction pancam Fred highlighted.

Pancam is a stack of the left and right frames. Background is and 'inverse-polar' projected HRSC image for our current location.
