And this is a quick go at the last image of the Martian surface taken by Phoenix.

Great mission - it's been a fantastic ride over the last few months. Thanks to all involved. Goodbye Phoenix.

Anyone have the final / last image that Pheonix took?

This unremarkable pair are sitting at the bottom of my MMB directory:

Hey Doug it's been a while since I've seen any colour mosaics from you - nice to see. smile.gif

Here is my attempt at both the 1702 and 1704 drive direction mosaics.

1702

1704

Both images link to the same blog post.

Do we go around it, or through it?

But looking at the HiRise photo, you can see a good path just to the West; around the dune, then angle SSW onto pavement.

Yeah, if you look at my Hi-Res analysis image you can see a nice blue path around the edge. smile.gif

Split posts on making colour images from monochromatic images taken under differing illumination to a new thread.

Ture, but this is an interesting idea, and that one of the lander is lovely whatever it really shows, great work Fran.

Split to a new thread.

Phoenix Lazarus mode worked and she was contacted successfully on Thursday evening, according to this article linked from the Phoenix twitter feed.

The payload is a little different to HAPS-1 as instead of the camera saving the pictures to its memory, the flight computer downloads them and then transmits them using the SSTV protocol so we should be able to receive images inflight (though pretty low quality compared to the normal pictures).

So are the pictures not saved on board at all?

Looks like another drive is happening tosol (1716).

I wonder if we'll see them turn the wheels to try and control the yaw caused by the dud wheel - the turn does look a little worrying from the drives so far.

Good point about the nearby point where we know Spirit can climb HP I had been lead down the same line of thinking as Doug before now.

Some data has hit the database - if the numbers can be believed then it was a <1cm drive. Quite a contrast to Oppy!

Still heading up the slope smile.gif wheel.gif

I had a quick go at trying to match the ripples and the outcrops ahead to the HiRISE and it looks to me like Tesheiner's position is bang on. smile.gif

And here is our 'Spirit pancam image of the week' in context of the rest of the Bonestell pan that has been downlinked so far. (hugely reduced in size at this time)

Yes, the plan for a long time has been to head over to von Braun after winter. It was expected that Spirit would have to descend off HP from the winter haven, but we heard a while back that they were going to attempt to climb back on top where the terrain is easier to drive on and also a lot shorter to get across to VB. From the first bump it's looking good for the shortcut. smile.gif

Also interesting this... using the arm to nudge a sample...

"Later this week, Phoenix engineers and scientists will use the robotic arm to attempt to push a soil sample piled in a funnel on top of the lander’s Wet Chemistry Laboratory into a cell for analysis."

"Later this week" would be tosol (146) if the tweet from Phoenix 12h ago is anything to go by...

It's been a long time since I last worked with the tracking data - but if I've got this right, it looks like tosols drive was about 130m WSW (maybe a little more as the site ID was reset at the end) - that is directly away from Victoria.

Goodbye Victoria - Onwards! wheel.gif

Now we're about to get going, and after posting a section in another thread, I thought it would be of interest to post the section of my latest terrain map overlaid onto the HiRISE image for the land that we are about to traverse. The colour overlay is now at 4m/pixel resolution, which is comparable to the larger ripple size.

Well spotted Phil.

I've made a polar image of the 1683 drive direction images and overlaid it onto my latest driveability image (considerably higher resolution than anything I've posted on UMSF so far) showing how the images point straight at the prominent SSW 'ray' (South is at the top, pancams are rotated using tracking data, position is approximately Tesheiner's route map position)

In the second image I've pointed out a few features that I have (very tentatively) matched up.

I've been getting a little behind worrying about the ripples further south. Just catching up with the last couple of colour mosaics.

If this is purely a focussing/chromatic issue, shouldn't there be a range of depths dependent on the colour?

Of course I could be entirely wrong, that just seemed like the most likely explanation to me, I'm not sure I've ever read anything about it. I'm sure there must be some real research into the phenomena out there, it's probably much more complicated! Any opticians out there?
