IMO it's next to impossible to match up a largely homogeneous cloud deck after it's been given 20-30 mins to change its appearance. So this has a heavy dose of guesswork and fudging. wink.gif

OK there is a HUGE amount of data to go through, it's still downloading! But here is a 360 degree horizon panorama to keep you going. smile.gif

Congrats to the team for another amazing flight!

Great. smile.gif

If there is any chance of getting the whole lot online today (set up ftp and then go to bed!) then I have 4-5 hours this evening with nothing currently to do. smile.gif

A sea level, yes.

But judging from all the bits flying around when the video starts just after, and the state of the remnants attached after landing surely it makes some kind of bang at altitude. smile.gif

Sorry if my question is not relevant : will a mike be riding along with the camera ?

Watch the video from HAPS-1 - plenty of audio all the way up and down. smile.gif Just a shame it missed the BANG! of the balloon.

The thought had crossed my mind about how cool dawn images would be. Great to see an attempt going ahead. smile.gif

Here is an attempt to fill in the missing bits using stills from the video. smile.gif

OK folks, after the balloon burst and HAPS-1 was plummeting back to Earth it did manage to grab a few shots pointed more towards the ground. Here is what I'm been able to piece together. Hardest jigsaw ever!

It's a bit dodgy, many of the images were quite badly blurred from the rapid motion of the falling gondola and the point of view changes quickly as it falls. So it was a challenge to match many of them up. But it is still so far in advance of what I thought possible from this flight I'm over the moon about it really. smile.gif

Congrats to all involved, I'm very proud to have been able to help out in my own little way on this amazing project.

Cheers,

James

Well this goes back to all those sims I did back in the old UMSFB thread. With one camera I think as is was about perfect. If I got to add a second camera then for sure it needs to point downish. Thinking back to my sims, I would suggest having it in 'portrait' orientation with the lower edge close but not quite nadir (centre of image about -50 degrees elevation (FOV is ~53 degrees, so this would capture ~-24 to -76 degrees elevation in level flight)

Maybe it's time to break out that sim code again now we have more data on how the balloon really behaves. smile.gif

Now THIS is what I always wanted from the UMSFB/HAPS-1 project - 360 degree panorama! cool.gif

Click image to go to my (never before used) blog with various sized download options.

I'll have a look for more images to try and fill in the foreground tomorrow.

Enjoy,

James

About the same as what I reckon. That'll be Denmark on the horizon, and on the far right not shown on Doug's overlay should be The Netherlands. Pretty much the whole North Sea there. smile.gif

I matched up the bit of East Anglia in that shot, it's the very northern tip.

Attached Image

Pink lines show the ballon trajectory in the forground.

The earth really does look like Google says it does; only bluer! smile.gif

A quick pan:

Around 180 degrees, looking east out over the North Sea. North is somewhere on the left. At the bottom of the second image from the left you can just see the curve of the coast of East Anglia. Under the cloud on the right should be Northern Europe. The moon is in there to, just left of centre. Taken at between 28,000 - 31,000m (92,000 - 101,000ft)

Yes I've still got all the 'modified times' preserved as the time each was taken. The latest and hence highest moon shot I can spot is this:

Very close to setting at 16:17BST - ~29,000m (95,000ft)

Now I've looked through them all I see there are even cooler black sky + curved horizon + moon setting shots. smile.gif

Definitely the same way out as in:

Yes, if you look at the top-left of the centre image peter59 posted you can see the tracks across the rim dune from the entry.

Seems like yesterday.

Did Oppy exit Victoria? if not, then how many sols should we wait? have you got any new photos(after Sol1625)?

No, the latest for sol 1628 shows we're at the same site as on sol 1625.

Looks to me like there was supposed to be a drive on sol 1627 but it didn't happen, I don't know if that was aborted or if there was a change of plan (or if I've misread the database).

The next drive is planned for sol 1630. I'd be surprised if Oppy exited Victoria on this drive, I would imagine they will get close to the top before having a short drive across the lip.

Three more drives, out by next weekend if I had to guess. smile.gif

The state of the work volume on sol 84 - what a mess. smile.gif Does that hill beyond Dodo-Goldilocks have a name? Very pretty.

We talked about the ceramic blank here, with close up photo

On the deck it is the white block that is in the area where the arm was stowed (and was therefore under the bio-barrier). About halfway between the camera and TEGA.

As they are 200x200 pixels they must be from the Pancam Data Tracking site. Nice work keeping us updated Peter.
