I'm curious how James has learnt this - has the tracking database provided clues?

I don't know for sure. If I comment that there is no data on Twitter I get a bunch of worried replies, so i was really heading that off as there is no reason to be concerned.

Circumstantial evidence that Oppy is OK:
1) We've seen data/images drop out many times before.
2) Recent comments on Twitter from insiders have sounded routine and unconcerned.
3) There are old images/data downlinked on recent sols.
4) New sequences are appearing in the tracking database (all be it just tau obs)
5) There are a bunch of 'Unexpected sequences' in the on board data list (which implies that the rover has sent data that the database had not been told about, i.e. ground data is missing, rover data fine)

The ~85m drive on sol 3744 was uphill, starting the long climb of Cape Tribulation. smile.gif

However, issues with the B computer

I'm assuming that when they say backup computer they are referring to 'A'. The 'B' side has been the primary since around sol 200.

Phil, I think that Cape Denbigh should be on the SE side of Oppy. Assuming I'm not mistaken in the labelled MP screen-grab I posted to Twitter yesterday.

Here is the full L456 mosaic of Lunokhod 2 Crater (it's been a long time since I've done this, I'm rather out of practice!)

The new location on sol 3643. I call one crater X15, but I don't know which one it really is.

I think you are right Phil. Based on the pointing data I beleve it's the blocky nearby one.

fredk: I would bet on tau retroactively jumping up within a week or so. The reported values are quite extraordinary.

So if we assume that tau is unlikely to be really as low as 0.2 then does that imply a Pancam cleaning event? pancam.gif smile.gif

Unfortunately ExoMars is pretty limited in terms of safe landing. He can land only between -5 to 25° latitude and surface must be at least 2 kilometers under zero altitude.

Peter Grindrod has a great GIF on his blog showing this.

According to Horizons it will be on 4th November 2015, at 05:22 UTC in the Eastern US, 05:23 in the UK and Western US, three minutes later still in Australia.

The first of Phil's polar images gives a real sense of the slope Oppy is on. Staring at it in my half awake Monday morning state, I get a real feeling that I may fall off the top of the rover and roll down Solander Point. blink.gif laugh.gif

That's very helpful. I remember many such virtual views from a distance being posted when we were at Victoria crater. I think it's time to resurrect the genre.

Yeah, this type of localization really helps.

The best example of this if the famous 'alan is lost' Spirit route maps of the inner basin:

Wintering at this spot means no great global views of Endeavour and of the surrounding plains until the end of 2014/beginning of 2015...
I thought they were to climb a little higher (white dot on image herewith) to get some spectacular views while spending a long time wintering at the same spot.

I don't think that the < 12th Dec (Station 5) is necessarily the spot for the whole winter. With such a large expanse of northern facing slopes I was under the impression that Oppy would inch her way up Solander Point rather than staying in one place. They want to be at that location before 12th December but could easily be up near your dot by the end of winter. smile.gif
