The cliff faces almost due south, so at this time of year (southern midwinter) it is essentially permanently shadowed. Oppy would have to wait for summer to get a non shadowed shot and I think we'll be long gone by then. James |

But that doesn't answer why they keep imaging it. Monitoring dust deposition? |

We backed off just a touch on 1582 (a matter of inches) But tosol (1584) is another driving sol so Oppy should be on the move in the next few hours. James |

Pan on the wall at Phoenix HQ and on Sky at Night at the same time. Doesn't get much better than that! I notice that in the first shot from inside the HQ at the start of the program you can see it on the left on the other side of the room. Gives a bit of context to it's location. James |

Great job Astro - I'm still working on getting the deck pan added to The Peter Pan Doug - Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the name Re-Peter Pan was just applied to the the repeated bits of Peter Pan where there were dropouts in the data the first time around. Andrew - yes it will take quite a long time - it depends just how much compression and how many filters are used - but I could imagine the horizon pan being done by the end of the primary mission. |

Yes, this is most likely part of the (Re)Peter Pan and probably would be more fitting in that thread. Technically this is known as the Deck Pan and has a different ID from Peter Pan. It also doesn't have the full resolution R1 like Peter just the ABC downsampled. I'll certainly be trying to get it into the Peter Pan of course. |

Great imagery James Canvin & Astro0. Thanks. My own thoughts are that the first 360 pans should have been the priority for the first few sols, before unstowing the arm & digging. That arm is quite an intrusion. Having the arm moving about is not too much of a problem. They have already retaken a few of the images in the near field when the arm was in the way the first time. Can I ask, what software was used & is it expensive? I use Hugin to stitch the images (free open source All the matching between frames is done using a program I have written myself from scratch which while has not cost me anything in monetary terms has cost me more time than I even want to think about over the years! Yes, don't worry, the data is arriving in the tracking database as normal. As Tesheiner says, just a problem with the system that gets the images out to us, it's happened many times before. Jim needs to give something a kick. To put your mind at ease here is a stamp from yestersol (1576) off the tracking site. ![]() James |

For the last couple of weeks there have been no updates over the weekend. The team operating Phoenix work 7 days a week but other non mission critical personnel get weekends off. |

I don't think so, those marks are at the end of each line of trenching. It may have been caused by the rasp as the scoop rotated at the end of the trench but a doubt it was intentional rasping. I think that is just a unfortunate choice of word relating to the scraping. Rasping would not 'flatten the layer' as the sentence reads, the scraping would. |

Lots of juicy power related figures in the latest Midwinter Spirit update. QUOTE The dust factor, a measure of the proportion of sunlight penetrating the coating of dust on the solar arrays, has remained almost unchanged at 0.349 (meaning that 34.9 percent of the sunlight, direct and scattered, that reaches the arrays penetrates the dust layer to generate electricity). Energy has been steady, averaging about 226 watt-hours each Martian day, or sol, and varying by only a couple of watt-hours. This is due in large part to a clear and stable atmosphere. Tau, a measure of dust in the atmosphere, has ranged from 0.178 to 0.207 and averaged 0.193. As a result, between 81 percent and 84 percent of the sunlight reaching Mars continues down through the atmosphere to Spirit's solar array. (The remaining 16 percent to 19 percent is either scattered or absorbed by dust particles in the atmosphere. The portion of sunlight that's scattered also contributes to Spirit's solar array energy.) A Tau this low means the skies above Spirit are remarkably clear. Not only that, Tau has decreased by an average of about 0.01 per week over the last month. (Though scattering and absorption are different and not exactly comparable, a clear mountain day on Earth has a Tau of 0.1-0.2.) Plus as a bonus a breakdown of what is using the power: MiniTES heater: 55Whr Battery Heater: 29Whr Everything else: 140Whr |

Good update from Emily. QUOTE They now think they understand the problem with the TEGA doors, that it is a mechanical problem, that an assembly "was not fabricated to flight specifications." However they still think they can get samples in, and plan to try it on sol 30 or 31. |
