<Sigh> This story still seems to be popping up on news sites all over the place even though it's clearly rubbish. At least a corrected story is out there:

Schoolboy's asteroid-strike sums are wrong

I guess 'Kid proved NASA wrong' is a better headline than 'Kid gets sums wrong', why let the truth get in the way.

Looks like news regarding the death of Ulysses may have been a little premature. smile.gif

QUOTE
Scientists continue to extract bits of data trickling to Earth from the Ulysses solar probe as ground controllers employ new strategies to extend the life of the 17-year-old spacecraft, including a "long shot" plan to put the observatory in hibernation until the sun's activity reaches its next peak in 2013.

If you compare the latest rhaz with some from a few sols ago you can see that the right rear has 'moved up' significantly. So it does look like the middle right has started to dig in. sad.gif Conversely though, it looks like the opposite is happening on the left side which may be a good sign (slightly nervous smile.gif )

I'm not so sure that it is part of the 'usual' El Dorado monitoring. That doesn't usually require super-res does it?

It does however look awfully like El Dorado was the target of the sequence. I really have no idea what, if anything, has been named after ACC at Gusev.

It looks like the 3rd row of the 1487 pan, that is not down yet, is of the sky. So this is a quick go at essentially the finished 6x2 image.

This is just the start of the sol 1487 pan but as it shows the region we're all interested in I thought I'd process what is down so far.

Judging from the state of the ISS construction in the illustration on that site, the ATV has also traveled back in time several years as it approached the ISS. rolleyes.gif

Looking at the docking animation on the ATV blog it looks like today's docking will require a time travel manoeuvre into the future (post S6) rolleyes.gif

Hmm, I wonder if this is just a random check or if they have noticed anything indicating that Spirit may have shifted a bit...

Would many of us be here at UMSF without him? Thank you Arthur C. Clarke.

May you rest amongst the stars you allowed us to dream about.

Unless it's a truly exceptional image, can you exhibit a bit more restraint (or compression, or resizing in a downward direction), especially with the artistic impressions that whilst very pretty, probably show less detail than their source material.

I really like seeing these interesting bits from the images. I am considering restarting my HiPOD idea/this thread idea, but on a separate site to remove the need for adding too much to the UMSF backup. I would welcome anyone who wanted to help out with this, finding out the good stuff and maybe providing some comments on them.

On a somewhat related note, I'm indebted to the wonderful IT site The Register for pointing out some amazing HiRISE pics of avalanches "caught in the act".

Of course the UMSF thread on this was started some 17 hours before that article was published. rolleyes.gif

One fly in the ointment might be the level of effort needed to man-rate Ariane.

IIRC Ariane 5 was initially was developed as a man-rated launch system to carry Hermes. So if you we ever going to man rate an existing rocket, Ariane 5 is probably easier than most.

This made me wonder whether these movements would be sufficient to cause the whole of Spirit's solar panel array to vibrate. Spirit is currently tilted at 30 degrees and in my dreams these vibrations could be used to shake much of the dust from Spirit's solar panels.

No. They are just going to vibrate the mirror used to point the Mini-TES to try and shake off some dust. I don't know the mass of this mirror, but I think it's fair to say it's negligible compared to the rest of the rover. Hence there will be essentially no vibration of Spirit as a whole.

Unlimited broadband in my new flat: ETA 1 week.

Great finds Stu.

Another nice new image taken near the terminator on the approch is in the 'pics' folder. It doesn't seem to be on the main MESSENGER page yet.

This whole episode reminded me that I hadn't finished doing the West Valley pan - not much need as there is an official one now, but it was nearly done anyway.

Here it is, including our little friend, along with lots of other funny shaped rocks. rolleyes.gif
