Odds are that NASA will run another one of its famous naming contests, so don't be surprised if the rover and descent stage both end up getting named something hokey like, for example, "Perseverance" and "Courage."

I read that too fast and saw that as "Cougar" and thought "Now there's a badass name for a landing system...The COUGAR!"

Quite welcome lyford!

Ha! I didn't even see that centsworth. Hopefully he wasn't planning to wipe it anywhere too critical...

Poor ATHLETE had no room to maneuver in the indoor testbed. All it could do was jimmy back and forth and spin in a circle. I would have loved to see this out driving around in the arroyo next to JPL.

Of course, who could forget the MER mockup itself driving around untethered.

Yep! I got there this year. Unfortunately it was so jam packed with visitors this year that the lines were ridiculous. I really didn't get to see as much as I wanted. Next year I'm making it a two day thing. I was much impressed by the MSL mockup that was driving over bolders that would have stopped the MERs dead in their tracks.

QUOTE (BruceMoomaw @ Mar 25 2006, 07:58 PM) *
Hmm. Well, the drawing on page 2 of that paper certainly doesn't look much like the shape of that thing in the MSL model -- you can see the RTG very easily in the latter, but NOT in the former. In particular, in the drawing there's no evidence of the flat rear cover plate which exists in the model and shields the RTG from view. (In fact, the silhouette of the combined RTG and radiator-fin assembly on one diagram of MSL as seen from the front led one earlier contributor to this site to enquire whether Batman was hitching a ride.) Is it still possible that JPL did a little fiddling with that model for the press conference to cover up the RTG, or is it just the result of a different viewing angle or a system redesign?

Well notice too that it's not a full rendering of the rover. A layer of architecture seems almost peeled away in that design diagram. The shroud may be a protective, insulative enclosure for the RTG more than an essential part of the thermal control system.
