New Horizons mission built and managed by APL revealed up close a new class of planets out in the outer solar system and a glimpse into what could be out there. Pluto turned out to be more interesting than ever imagined. Alan Stern and his team did a great job to humanity in persevering with the mission. His interest with suborbital science and commercial spaceflight should perhaps allow him to push for a Pluto orbiter, kuiper belt mission by private enterprise?!It would be a first.

It's a pity that Percy seems to be unable to traverse Seitah to examine layered rock from up close particularly where it seems to be overlain by volcanic deposits.

As Curiosity is heading towards the sulphate unit I have one question in my mind..the sulphate unit encountered by Opportunity in Meridiani was called Burns Formation. Would this formation include the whole sulphate unit in Gale?

To me the southern route that would have the rover pass by Kodiak on its way to the Delta looks more scientifically compelling. Any reason given for a change in direction heading North?

Close up views of the surface showing the ridges remind of a similar process happening on Europa.

Ganymede is a planet in its own right. An iron core and silicate mantle topped by an icy crust which is partly fluid. An.internal heat source which generates a magnetic field. The surface exhibits tectonic activity possibly still ongoing. I wonder the source of its watery/ oxygen atmosphere whether is solely due to a collisional source and not a result of this tectonic acitivity?!

There is a topographically lower lying unit between the current rover position and delta. I know it may be premature to comment but Is this unit thought to represent lake bed deposits or still representative of a volcanic unit?

Interesting rocks on the crater floor..any ideas as to the greyish greenish color on some of the white rocks?

Has it been decided where to send the rover on a north or south route?

Dont know if its the correct site to post this but looking at the orbital view, the rock pavement next to where the rover is sitting right now looks morelike sedimentary to me rather than a lava field and yet i am no geologist so who knows.

So is Mont Mercou supposed to be made up of sulphate rock and hence this location would represent the contact with the clay unit?

The adjacent olivine unit looks to be at a lower level than the spot where Percy landed. Does that mean its older terrain?

interesting to note the varying colour of surface rocks from white to grey.

So right across the sand dunes would be the sulphate unit?

I still cannot come to terms with the idea that Europa has moved from tectonics (ridge formation) onto chaos as the ice crust has thickened over its 4 billion year history. I guess radar should tell us a lot about what is actually happening.

QUOTE (JRehling @ Feb 18 2020, 03:21 AM) *
Triton has a weird (and, of course, very long) "season" but, yes, the sub solar latitude will be nearly equatorial around 2040. It also was just a bit south of equatorial in 1989, so the season will be similar to the Voyager 2 flyby. For the entire time between those, the sub solar latitude has been considerably south and the north polar region has not seen daylight in decades.

As a convenient comparison, the length of a Tritonian day is about the same as on Pluto so one might expect similar coverage of a near-encounter and far-encounter hemisphere to that which New Horizons yielded at Pluto. We could have better luck with neptune-shine images of Triton's sub-Neptunian hemisphere since Neptune is brighter than Charon.

So by 2040 as Trident flies through the Neptune system, it will be end of summer in the southern hemisphere, do we expect most of the south polar ice deposit seen at the time of Voyager disappear and instead an icy polar cap developing over the northern hemisphere??

While it's nice to hear about an interest in doing a Triton mission, it's a pity it would have to be a flyby mission. Personally I would prefer an orbiter mission but again timing and costs determine the planning of such missions.

I have been reading up ahead of the launch and hopefully safe landing of Perseverance rover on Mars. I am surprised at the energy constraints the Curiosity rover had to work with given that 110 W are used to generate electricity for rover operations on the surface but a part of it also is' wasted' in keeping the rover parts warm. Has anything changed with the new Perseverance rover regarding energy usage ??

Was it always planned for the rover to descend off the pediment back onto the clay unit or did I miss something?

Greenheugh pediment looks like its going to be a rough traverse for the rover. What does the pediment represent?
