1.It seems that these meteorite rocks have been sitting in Meridiani for billions of years.
2.Sulphate bedrock seems to indicate that this landscape was drenched in ground-surface shallow waters.
3.What effect would water have on the meteorite rocks if any??The unaltered nature of the Iron Nickle rocks would indicate that Meridiani has been dry for most of Martian history??

The longer Spirit is stuck around this area of Mars,"Calypso "panorama becomes more fitting as a name to describe this particular vista in Gusev crater.

Full inline quote removed - ADMIN

To me it sounds a bit far fetched but i'm no mathematician or physics expert so i cant comment about this hypothesis...i would think the thickness of the ice layer would affect to what extent this process oygenates the underlying water ocean?!

The fact that Io can be a source of sulphates detected on the surface of Europa, there's no way of finding out by an orbiter (except pattern of distribution)unless we have direct sampling of the water underneath Europas crust??

I believe the thin oxygen atmosphere was attibuted to interaction of solar wind with water ice surface ...how sure are we about that? Can the oxygen originate from europas interior?

I'm thinking........how plausible is it to find other rock types around this area which were blasted off following the formation of Endeavour crater....is there a chance that we could find phylosilicates before we even get to the crater itself..will such rocks survive the blast which formed the crater??

Are we sure those craters spotted recently are impact craters or explosive??water ice sublimating ?similar to the spider structures seen at the poles except that the mechanism for the latter seems to be C02!

teleconference was about water on the moon! Solar wind trapped in lunar soil:hydrogen ions combining with oxygen in the soil to form hydroxyl and water molecules...higher concentration at the higher latitudes towards the poles...diurnal variations with higher concentrations in the morning and dusk!

Sorry to seem to be sticking to the same topic but forgive my excitement but as I recall the Odyssey story had come up after naming Santorini at Opportunity's track at Meridiani...but I have to say the idea of the Calypso panorama is a brilliant idea...i believe the genius has been Ustrax!??right?

I see that Spirit has been stuck around this area on Mars for quite some time now..would that explain the Ulysses and Calypso panorama terms being used following the concept of Ulysses being held on the island of OGYGIA(today island of Calypso) in Homer's famous ODyssey??I'm sure that Spirit will free herself just like Ulysses managed to set himself free from the spell of the nymph Calypso and continue on his voyage of discovery just like Homer had described it! smile.gif

Any ideas as to whether current Mars orbiters with radar have studied the undersurface of such regions on the planet releasing Methane gas? unsure.gif

well maybe I can comment about this Santorini as I come from another mediterranean island - Malta -which also is considered by some archeologists as possibly having been part of Atlantis due to the numerous neolithic temples which date earlier than the pyramids in Egypt! And also is featured in Homers Odyssey as the place where Homer was cast away for 7 years under the spell of the nymph Calypso!!

Anyway,Santorini is a volcanic structure which erupted violently and I've read in some books,at this moment ACT OF God comes to mind and also featured in documentaries on Discovery Channel as having been the massive eruption at the time when Moses was leading his people out of Egypt...the column of fire they saw at night could have been the eruption of Santorini;the 10 punishments on Egypt some relate to the natural phenomena associated with this eruption as well as the parting of the waters at the sea of Reeds when the jews were crossing into the Sinai peninsula during their flight from Egypt could have resulted from a big tsunami which crashed into the egyptian coastline! huh.gif

In fact that was going to be my question regarding how representative Phoenix soil samples are of Mars?

Also should we expect to find large deposits of calcium carbonate buried somewhere on Mars which we still havent detected?
