This is panorama from left pancam images from sol 530. There are some significant hills on the horizon ahead - Oppy is aproaching Erebus!

Very diverse terrain in the last pancam images from sol 549 - doesn't look like hillside at all:

More interesting to me is the small filled crater ahead of oppy :-)

Yes, I saw them, but I had to go to work. Now I'm at work, so I'll have time to look to them :-) And the other thread is much more suitable for this discussion :-)

And there's more - look at the apparent change of the color of the soil just left of the line between the hard and soft soil. In the map that Pando made, it seems, that Oppy stuck in a much much brighter place than the soil covered before that, and that to the left of this bright patch there's no more such bright patches way down to Erebus (where those bright patches are rocks). So to me, the way to Erebeus doesn't look so bad.

Looking at the rover tracks in the "freeing" rear hazcam picture and I thought - can this dune be a filled very old small crater? Both weels came over the soil at the same place, which could be the rim of the crater, and then forming a dune over the crater as very unfortunate coincindence?

Someone to make 3d of the "dinosaur tail" image? Looks like the way ahead is getting extremely wavy...

What about RATting the soil just in front of the front wheels (in fact rear in the moment - oppy is driving backwards, right?), is it possible for th IDD to reach these locations?

On a different note, it appears that Opportunity has made some good progress toward Erebus.  If I had to guess, I'd say it covered about half the remaining distance since the steering problem occurred.

I think I can almost make out some outcrop ledges in that image.

I'm not so sure, that oppy has moved much farther south - Viking and Voyager are still very well visible - http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...DIP1893R0M1.JPG
There is not much differences in the navcam pictures since april 19th, so I think, that oppy is standing still, while the MiniTES related reset is being investigated.

The air is pretty transparent - Gusev wall is obvious, so Spirit is enjoying very good solar exposure :-)

Simple image name decoder - you can browse your downloaded images or just paste any image name in the editbox and click 'decode' to have it decoded.

And I don't think oppy has moved much farther than Voyager - there aren't any significant nav images since sunday.

Why should be excluded?
It may be :-) A bigger impactor hit somewhere and lifted tiny pieces of rock in the air recently (a couple of years ago?), which made such small craterlets.
Look at the Oppy's trails, they still can be seen from orbit, and after exiting Endurance, there were very small differences in the trails left behind 6 months ago.So even in the windy Meridiani, dust deposition process is slow. And this "craterlet" seems with very round edges, so it is not impossible to have been formed years ago and not still been completly erased.

And sorry for my bad english, feel free to correct me anytime :-), I'd appreciate it :-).

Bright soil or just a reflection?. Might the etched terrain be a different soil type brought to the surface by victoria.... Nah! probably not.

Yeah, it looks like the soil is getting different - all disturbed crests of dunes are kinda brighter. IMHO the etched terrain won't be much different than the plains behind Oppy - just the soil will be much brighter.

PS. I'm working on simple image name decoder, probably will finish it in couple of hours.

Is it possible that Oppy has detected its backshell and parachute in the distance? These are from the latest posting of pancam images. The direction is about right, NNW. A dark dot beside a whitish one near the horizon, and they are similar both in L and R images. They sit neatly into the scenery when looked in 3d.

No, it isn't :-)
The backshell/parachute site is long way to NE:
http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2004/02/09/
I think it's several km from current location of the rover.

And hello to everyone and greetings from Bulgaria :-)
