Question: how do you "gun" a vehicle that moves at a speed that is 100s of times slower than a 2CV?

Also, which way do you mean by reverse? Spirit travels normally in reverse, so does throwing it in reverse mean go forward, which is really backward, or go backward, which is forward? Things would have been so much simpler had a rear wheel broken. wink.gif

Actually I am grateful that it is the RF wheel that is broken. From my testing in the sandbox, if you had to lose one wheel either the LF or the RF are less problematic. Any other combination can cause the bogie to lift one of the active wheels and therefore lose more traction. Suppose you lose the RM while all other wheels are working, when you drive forward, it would be likely that the RR wheel would come up now you have only one active wheel on the right side. If you lost the RR, when you are driving backwards you would lift the RM. With the loss of the RF you can drive backwards or forwards and "wheelies" are only a rare occurrence.

... And in the worst case in which Spirit cannot move any more and thus is becoming a stationary rover, it will do a much better science with its advanced optics and camera than the Viking landers ! smile.gif
We will be inventive and use Spirit to monitor Mars during long periods (providing we have a minimum budget). For example, just imagine making a 24hrs panoramic movie with the navcams showing moving shadows during the day and even moving stars and satellites at night in the Martian Sky ! "A Day on Mars" movie !!! rolleyes.gif

Just a writer taking creative liberties. The article is really not so negative. The "space junk" reference isn't so much a dig as a metaphor to underscore the mission's longevity and success.

BTW, is anyone else irritated by the constant reiteration that Endeavor is "twenty times larger than Victoria"? That really understates the difference in scale. Craters are not one-dimensional; you can't use a linear basis for comparison. They should be using the areas (about 300x larger) or volumes (about 1200x) for comparison. I think your average person (myself included) would find the 300x figure to be the most visually intuitive.

That's easy: any area on the screen or on printed paper (space) containing inane words (junk).

This is the first time I have heard of any weakness in the rocker bogie system.... interesting.

But it is a graceful degradation. Any system when brought outside the design parameters will break down. The fact we can still drive Spirit is testimony that the R/B system is quite good!

I also wanted to let you know that today at around 4:40pm we mixed and leid down the last batch of clay/diatomaceous earth mix for a grand total of 5400lbs. Tomorrow morning, while media will be watching, we will roll down the rover in the sandbox. Hopefully this is the right mix and the rover will not simply be swallowed by the sandbox ;-)

That takes guts doing it in front of the media. Remember what happened to Geraldo Rivera. wink.gif
