Paolo, does the testbed rover have a name? Come on, own up, you must have a nickname for it...
We need to know so we can start a "Free XXX, the rover that's helping to free Spirit!" webpage, and make t-shirts...! -------------------- |

We need to know so we can start a "Free XXX, the rover that's helping to free Spirit!" webpage, and make t-shirts...! It does not have a cool name. Its official name is SSTB1 (Surface System TestBed 1). We did not have a naming contest for this one. The t-shirt *I* want is "Freed Spirit" but I am settling for a "Freeing Spirit". In which way did the team compensate any weight differences between the Test-rover and Spirit. The Test-rover doesn’t carry solar panels nor the real science arm for instance…
On the photo Doug pointed out, the Test-rover has to sink at least another 10 centimeter into the soil I believe. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/freespirit/ |

... The Test-rover doesn’t carry solar panels nor the real science arm for instance… They are not real solar panels, but their weight distribution and mass are correct. QUOTE On the photo Doug pointed out, the Test-rover has to sink at least another 10 centimeter into the soil I believe. ... That image was taken with the rover just being installed in the sandbox, all 6 wheels running. Today we will position and sink the rover as it is on Mars. Any other suggestion? ;-) Paolo -------------------- Disclaimer: all opinions, ideas and information included here are my own,and should not be intended to represent opinion or policy of my employer.

I suppose that the test MER can simulate in rotating only 5 wheels instead of 6?
How do you compensate the real weight of test MER in the Earth knowing that Mars has around 1/3 gravity of Earth. I thought, in order to compensate, the test MER must have wider wheels in order to simulate to gravity in Mars or her weight is similar to ones of the Mars. Whichever of them? Thanks, |
