I'm wondering if the safe path outlined in this LINK will have to be reconsidered in light of the recent encounter with treacherous ripples. The path through the canyons crosses hundred of ripples and in most areas there is no ripple free flank to go around. Tough choices, wheels chewed up by sharp rocks vs rover imbedding ripples. Mars is a difficult place to explore.
You can see the terrain better on Joe's map LINK -------------------- |

Not sure about that... but here's another look at the current ripples (sol 678) in a circular version of Jan's panorama, posted earlier.
Checking in from Minot, North Dakota today - the move looks like a small turn in place or very small move, not requiring another map. Phil -------------------- ... because the Solar System ain't gonna map itself.

You can see the terrain better on Joe's map LINK Well, they're still heading more or less due south according to the "safe transit" plan--here's a comparison: Maybe they were just being ultra-cautious at Sourdough and might have powered on through without much problem? -------------------- |

That was my thinking. The team was not taking any chances.

I added a large area around the Mt. Sharp destination to the track map (drag or zoom out to see it), so it can now be used to look at that area. Based on the safe transit route, I think this is the indicated entry point:

very nice work neo56, i pilfered sections from that sol663 and your sol659 pano for an improved long-baseline anaglyph (sorry if its backwards i dont have glasses to check)
EDIT:: had a 50% chance so of course i got it backwards.. anaglyphs are now un-reversed! (reminder to self: put in parellel view before convert anaglyph in SPM) |

Thanks for these, atomoid. The anaglyphs are reversed (still viewable of course by flipping your glasses around).
