Phil reporting from Salisbury, UK: so I looked up vermilion in the dictionary and now I think I was right and Steve Squyres was wrong (or at least whoever wrote that previous link). So my spelling stays.
Phil -------------------- ... because the Solar System ain't gonna map itself.

Phil is right.
In Utah, between Zion National Park and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, north of highway 89 are the VERMILION CLIFFS with 1L. I was there in 2000 and have seen them. Great panorama. See also Hallwag USA Road Guide no.6 Southwest. jvandriel |

Phil reporting from Salisbury, UK What about the solstice Phil? Is there a field report? Around here was discovered some years ago the Solstice Stone in Tambores, Vila Nova de Foz Côa: -------------------- "Ride, boldly ride," The shade replied, "If you seek for Eldorado!"

Googling "vermilion" _vs_ "vermillion" cliffs gives 372,000 _vs_ 94,000 hits, respectively, so "vermilion" has the edge, although "vermillion" appears to be a common useage.

Phil is right. jvandriel Phil is more right than wrong, but not absolutley right. Webster's (US) dictionary has one L as the main spelling and two LLs as an acceptable variant. English English dictionaries vary but seem to tend the same way. The word's origins are in the Middle English "vermelion", one L. Either is fine, and both are correct. Linguistically onwards, Kenny |

Route map, updated to sol 857.
A loooong drive this time (50+ meters), nice to see that. Because this new site has no significant features to correlate with the background map and the distance measurements based on parallax are not quite precise if you select dune features, I simply used the info from the pancam data tracking web to plot this new position: 6m eastwards and 52m southwards from sol 855's. |

A notable milestone?
It looks like Opportunity is just now one VC diameter away from the near rim. |

Also to be celebrated, Oppy passed the 5 mile distance traveled mark back around Sol 850. Great job to the Rover team!!! Poor Spirit...no longer in the running.

I'm just a little amused when I recall that, in less than nine total days on the lunar surface, the three Apollo lunar rovers traveled on the order of 50 km, total.
I know, I know -- the circumstances are entirely different. And you *do* get a more thorough investigation of the site when you stop every few meters than if you sprint for three or more km at a time. It's astounding and greatly appreciated, what these rovers can do. I guess I'm just saying there's a long way to go... and I look forward to every step along the way. -the other Doug -------------------- “The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right.” -Mark Twain

Anyone think they'll have a press conference when they arrive at Victoria crater? Haven't had one for months.. maybe more than a year.

Here's where I think we are on sol 860 - based on the tracking data, there aren't many 'islands' in sight to get a fix on at the moment.

James James, I think that the sol 860 route is still 2 milimeters back (north) and one crest on the East. The hint is the next small outcrop is still south of Oppy. Also, the other hint, is the mini-meteorite crater on the second crest left of Oppy (somewhat blur at sol 858 and clear at sol 860). http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...CNP0705L0M1.JPG http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...CNP0705L0M1.JPG [attachment=6423:attachment] Rodolfo Previous (858 sol), and present (sol860) |
