Look at the words "incredible" and "surprise".

So it's something improbable, unbelievable and unlikely, something totally unexpected.

...I suspect HiRISE has imaged remnants of a BBQ over at Homeplate...

We put it up on bricks, it shouldn't have burnt the ground.

I will go out on a limb and guess that Opportunity rushed to near it's present location instead of the better panorama location at The Beacon, for a reason.

You may be partly right about the reason but what exactly is a 'better panorama'? Going to the highest spot is best for distant views but it produces a rather flat horizon. Having some relief above eye level makes for more dramatic images. It also gets the geologists eyeball to eyeball with the cliffs. From a geologist's point of view the best panoramas will be the ones taken from the lowest (most slumped?) promontories that it's safe to go out onto. I think this may have been a factor in choosing Verde over both Frio and Beacon.

By the way can someone tell me if there is a time of day when we get direct sunlight on that Beacon cliff?
If so then I would expect a whole time-lapse series of pancam shots from this spot in addition to the mega-panorama itself.

The wall of Beacon we are looking at faces almost exactly south. Should be lots of sun mid day during mars summer--a ways off yet.

Just saw this in the other thread

For some sunlight on the south face of The Beacon in the near future it's the wrong season (I guess). But they could take a picture with more exposure, couldn't they?

Right! Getting higher is better for viewing a more distant horizon but, thoughts of "Big Crater" aside, who cares about the horizon at this point? It should all be about Victoria Crater. The view of the rim is as good, or better, due to the head-on viewing angle, than that from the beacon. Also, what about the great look at the beacon cliff itself? We would not have that had Opportunity bypassed Cabo Verde.

In the Cabo Verde pamorama we have a great view of the far rim AND one of Victoria's highest cliffs, the beacon panorama will be missing one of these. Anyway why talk like it's a choice? We probably will see the view from the beacon, and many or most of the other promontories around Victoria. Patience!

We wouldn't have to wait until full summer but having southerly sunlight at noon wont happen until after ~ Sol 1090, although the best time would be mid summer (Opportunity Sol 1223). In any case Oppy will be well gone from here by then.

Should we put the LIVE CHAT function of UMSF to work for those without Nasa TV? Could follow along? Or just post here....

IIRC, the chat works, but still feels a bit clunky.

I have NASA TV on the screen, 11 minutes to go by my reckoning. Is there any way to permanently capture this video stream on my Hdisk? It would be nice to extend my astronomy archives with video captures as well

Yay, they got an image of Opportunity. Or at least its shadow. smile.gif And its tracks. But you can't read its license plate!
