Here're the latest navcam pictures taken during sol 1850: http://nasa.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/navcam/2009-03-18/
Spirit is no longer stuck, but I think the attempt to go on top of HP via the NE path is finished and we are going to the West Valley. A pancam mosaic of the western route is planned for tosol. |

...Mmmm Rocks... James Mmmm, very, very nice rocks, despite the talus (loose fallen rock) obscuring most of the lower part of the exposure. Thanks for the great panoramas. Note the somewhat gravelly (lapilli-bearing in geo-jargon) layer visible to the lower right and the low angle cross-bedding present throughout. As for the rest of Home Plate, this layered sequence appears to consist of surge beds deposited by impact cratering or explosive volcanism. The steeply dipping layered rocks visible on the Von Braun and Goddard structures probably are surge beds too. --HDP Don |

Dude, that's totally scree and not talus. Umm. For the uninitiated, definition of "scree" from Glossary of Geology, 5th Ed., p. 580, American Geological Institute: "A term commonly used in Great Britain as a loose equivalent of talus in all of its senses..." So you say tomahto and scree, and I say tomayto and talus. You can learn a lot on this forum. -- HDP Don |
