Also, since I'm thinking about surface operations on Venus, the state-of-the-art in high temperature electronics has advanced quite far in the past decade. Its now possible to buy off the shelf chips from vendors designed to operate at the 250-300 C range. The Science journal has a new article about the recent advances in high-temperature electronics for Venus missions, especially silicon-carbide chips developed at the Glenn center:
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/358/6366/984 The current record holder has 175 transistors and is already considered for actual missions. The article also mentions a separate work done at JPL using mechatronics (gears and stuff) instead of transistors, which sounds positively like steampunk. |
