Wow, five years! We have enjoyed the Mars Exploration Rovers, but so much else has happened!
Over this time, the following missions have launched: Rosetta Messenger Deep Impact Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter Venus Express New Horizons Hinode Stereo Phoenix Kayuga Chang'e 1 Dawn Chandrayaan 1 Koronas-Foton Also active during this time: The Voyagers Cassini Mars Express Mars Global Surveyor Mars Odyssey Orbiter ACE Hayabusa Stardust Ulysses ICE Genesis SMART-1 SOHO WIND TRACE RHESSI What an amazing five years! Oh, and I wonder what obvious mission I left off... -------------------- |

I segond all these comments!
Life changed 5 years ago and what a nice banner... even the date has been perfect I wonder if you can do what you used to do times to times, Doug: inform us of the number of hits, the most visited topic (I bet it's "Eduardo's" Oppy's route map), etc, etc... Thanks so much --climber -------------------- |

It's worth reposting an image from way back at the summit of Husband Hill. Ah, you were both so young [attachment=17224:Doug_Hel...n_Summit.jpg] Astro0 Wow that pic makes me look like I have G cups If only! Thanks for all your kind words guys (and gals?) I wouldn't swap him for the world (or Mars for that matter). |

I think secretly Helen counts herself lucky that Doug's circle of friends are all over the globe and not from the pub down the street because they are less likely to drop by at inopportune times unannounced

That's great!
In contrast, my girl always complains about my lack of time. She even thinks that I love Mars more than her, which is ridiculous |

Is Hayabusa not the record holder for number of views? It shows 869913.
In any case: my congratulations with the 5 yrs anniversary and I'm looking forward to what is yet to come. But should we measure our best wishes to Doug and the UMSF community in terms of years or in terms of missions? For example, with the ongoing discussions on the mission to Pluto I feel comfortable that "we" are on this mission and will see it through one way or the other till arrival in 2015. Right, Doug?? But I am equally interested in the OPAG reports and its ongoing discussions in UMSF. If TSSM goes ahead - which I sincerely hope - we are talking about 2030... |

When I found UMSF, I found myself immediately "at home". The amount of collective space knowledge on this forum is staggering. I can hardly keep up with everything and I can't contribute much, but knowing there's a whole bunch of space enthousiasts (or should I say "fanatics") out there makes me feel less lonely.
This is the place to be. Let's keep it up! |

All I can say is that while a baker's dozen of people (or so, not counting members who have left in the meantime) joined the then mer.rlproject forum on its first day of 2/8/04, I can proudly say that I was the first person to join on the following day, 2/9/04. So today is actually my own five-year anniversary here.
I know it can be a huge pain to be in charge of such a big thing, Doug, and I know it can get stressful at times. But I'm impressed that the young, wide-eyed and joyful British hotshot who thought up this site is still wide-eyed and joyful as much as you are. Me, I'd probably be growling at the cats by now... If we don't express our appreciation often enough, I apologize. You provide a unique and valuable portion of my intellectual life, and I dunno what I'd do without this place. Thanks for doing it for us... for the field... and mostly, for yourself! Enjoy. -the other Doug -------------------- “The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right.” -Mark Twain

I second THAT comment. And add that I'm sorry that I couldn't get the beautiful birthday-banner uploaded in time that Astro0 made for me - I'm travelling today - hopefully airport-waiting time and WiFi will sort that out (edit - or over breakfast ) Doug The only thing I would have done differently on the banner would have been to have three moons, one bright, one dark, one bright. But that would have been too geeky.
