Has anyone been able to open the HiRISE JPG2000 images with Photoshop ?
I already tried the plugins mentioned in the FAQ: http://hiroc.lpl.arizona.edu/images/jp2.html but still get errors when trying to open JP2 HiRISE images in Photoshop CS3. My usual workaround is to either use the freeware viewer irfanview (which handles even the large HiRISE JP2 without problems, but is 8 bit only) or to convert the JP2 to TIFF with the "Kakadu/kdu_expand" tool, but it would be nice to open them in Photoshop directly (and it seems kind of strange that a Program as expensive as Photoshop should not be able to handle JP2 format correctly) ... Thanks for any hints & suggestions. |

on MS windows using photoshop , NO
but this might work ( it will be a lot of work) Nip2 dose open jpg2000 IF AND ONLY if it is built from source with the imagemagick c++ api ( magick++ ) and on windows imagemagick will need to be built for Q16 ( the default on windows is Q8 ) -- or -- i do this ( on linux ) but should work on windows i use the cmd line program G'MIC . it uses the Magick++ also and will need to be built with that option i do know that building IM on windows is "somewhat" easy i have done it a bunch of times -- over 5 years ago... |

I always use OpenEV to handle these images and then export to a more common format (JPEG, PNG, TIFF).

I always use OpenEV to handle these images and then export to a more common format (JPEG, PNG, TIFF). I too have been used to use other tools (like kdu_expand) to convert the JP2 into TIFF first, but it would be nice to be able to open the images directly in Photoshop, and it seemed kind of strange that such a "big" program like PS could not handle the JPG2000 format correctly, even after installing the special plugins mentioned in the HiRISE FAQ (http://hiroc.lpl.arizona.edu/images/jp2.html). It does not seem to be a memory issue either since enough RAM should be available and small freeware program like irfanview can display even the largest images without problems. So I wondered if it is just me or a general problem with Photoshop and HiRISE JPG2s. |

I always use OpenEV to handle these images and then export to a more common format (JPEG, PNG, TIFF). I can't get OpenEV to open jp2 images, it says 'not recognised as a supported file format'. The help text doesnt list jp2 as a valid file format, only jpeg. I'm using version 1.8 (win32), not sure if that is the latest. Is this something else I need to do/install to get jp2s to load? Edit: I've found the answer. I needed the FWTools build, I had an old version of a different build I think. |
