Hello, this is the Flight Director update for Monday April 19th, my name is Jessica Collisson and today I’m the Flight Director for Opportunity. This weekend was an exceptional weekend for both of the rovers. We had some recordbreaking activities on each of the vehicles.
To start with, Spirit did a 75 meter traverse in one day, which is the longest the Spirit rover has traveled in one day. And today she’ll be coming up close to the edge of Missoula crater and we’ll plan some remote sensing activities. The total distance traveled on Spirit is 867 meters and so we’re closely approaching our one kilometer mark on that vehicle. Likewise, Opportunity has just been driving across the plains as she did a 140 meter traverse in one day which is the record for the mission sofar and you have to remember the terrain is very different at the Opportunity site and the onboard navigation on Spirit has a lot more work to do and a lot more autonomous driving in terms of maneuvering around obstacles which come up into the path. But in addition, that 140 meters that Opportunity did, put Opportunity over the 600 meter mark which was one of our mission objectives ans so we have now completed all of our mission objectives on Opportunity. And we have just approached the ridge of Fram crater and this is very exciting and tonight we’re planning some activities to use the arm and then we will approach a little bit closer to the rocks that are strewn around the perimeter of the crater. So, very exciting weekend and we look forward to lots of images from these two new locations. |
