I used to think "ahh - HiRISE imagery will make doing route maps much better, I'm looking forward to it", now instead I think "ahh - HiRISE imagery will make Phils route maps much better, I'm looking forward to them"

Gorgeous map Phil, as usual. One of the reasons I love seeing all these maps is reading the names of the features that now seem to flash by as we head south... can't recall anyone ever mentioning the "Vermillion Cliffs" before? Did we see those on any images? Can anyone point me to them if we did.
Vermillion Cliffs... beautiful, just beautiful... What a planet we're exploring here... what an amazing world we're going to make of it some day... -------------------- |

Thanks for the phantastic map, Phil! Which program do you use to compile it?
Btw.: How do you spell "Vermilion/Vermillion Cliffs"? Cause on the web I most often found the "double l" version. What is correct? Michael |

the name Vermillion Cliffs comes from:
http://athena.cornell.edu/news/mubss/archive/2005_09.html and my spelling would appear to be a typo! I'll fix it. I use Photoshop for everything. I would wash my socks with it if I could. Phil -------------------- ... because the Solar System ain't gonna map itself.

I use Photoshop for everything. I would wash my socks with it if I could. I was recently rearranging furniture in my home with my wife and remarked that this would be much easier with Photoshop. I could paint the walls, remove spots from the carpet and make a duplicate armchair to match the one we already have. -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.

Route map, updated to sol 855. http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...4KP0695L0M1.JPG Woowee! Goodby, Etches; Hello, Sand Sea! If we are heading directly to Beagle, we'll be traversing a long stretch of continuous ripples diagonal to our track. Everybody cross your fingers until further notice! (We'll make allowances for a few more typos.) But it's nice to get back to the blue line! -------------------- My Grandpa goes to Mars every day and all I get are these lousy T-shirts!

Frankly, I no longer believe the rover will be able to stay on that line. I believed, since first draw that hypotetical path until some weeks ago, that the terrain could be smoother on this area, based on the orbital imagery. However, the "ground truth" says better stay on the ripple troughs, crossing them whenever possible.

There are two smaller craters it will encounter near Beagle. |

Hopefully Oppy can continue to blaze ground like she has over the past week, despite the tricky driving. It looks we're almost within 1 crater diameter of Victoria's closest rim! That sure amazes me at the size of the thing! |

Then it's likely that Oppy will go due south and then approach Beagle from the west. There are two smaller craters it will encounter near Beagle. True, but if you have to "cross the tracks" at some point, then wouldn't it be better to do it now by heading east (over ripples we can already see) following the arc of outcrops to Oppy's left, before turning 90 degrees right once north of Beagle? That route would seem to minimize the rippled areas you'd need to cross, as it has more evaporite outcrops in it. Andy G |
