I am starting a new thread for the exploration of the Pediment - we should see a climb onto its surface very soon. It's a rough surface so progress may be slow.

And here we are on top of the Pediment! (EDIT: spoke too soon, we are still in the ramp leading up to it, but well on the way). A tricky panorama - I adjusted it a bit here and there - and made a circular version. Thanks, Jan.

Onwards and upwards! Jan's panorama for sol 3390 in circular form. We can see out over the pediment surface now.

QUOTE (charborob @ Feb 20 2022, 03:22 AM) *
Sol 3390 Lmastcam:

WOW if i'm not mistaken that's the pediment, right? That broad, light-toned expanse with undulations that look like the same texture as seen from orbital imagery. It seems the pediment surface is fairly cobble & sediment-free which could make for easy driving (unlike the foreground!). The central ridge which runs down the middle and dominates the horizon in front of the rover seems to have several bedding layers. I'm somewhat surprised that the dip of those beds does not seem to gently slope downhill like the pediment does but rather appears horizontal. If these represent palaeo-surfaces then perhaps this suggests an age difference between the ridge and the pediment...

Amazing. Shooting from the hip, this would appear at first glance to be some sort of evaporite structure like barite 'roses' in terrestrial deserts. Maybe gypsum?

How wonderful is this? It appears to be a "desert rose", likely a twinned crystal of gypsum (calcium sulfate) grown within a sandy sediment and incorporating some of the sand grains in it's structure. Common in the desert where there are saturated, liberalized waters percolating in porous, Sandy sediments. Note the "surface" it is on is actually a flat plane cutting across many fine layers. Aeolian erosion in action!
These features speak volumes about the processes involved here.

The "rose" was near the 3393 location, so not very visible in the 3397 view.

You can see "roses" in this 3393 ML:

Good. These views, plus the 3393 panorama, give a context of this lithology. I see some fracture fills, which suggests saturated groundwaters.

Yeah, thanks Phil. I was curious where we climbed up onto the pediment around sol 2700. Your identifications helped me find the spot, with Western Butte easily visible in this MR view:

We climbed up somewhere just to the lower left of Western Butte in that view.

MSL will backtrack down to find an alternate route to avoid ventifacts: "Over the next couple weeks, Curiosity will climb down from the pediment to a place it had previously been exploring: a transition zone between a clay-rich area and one with larger amounts of salt minerals called sulfates."

Jan's last two panoramas in circular form. We have left that narrow valley leading up to the pediment. Presumably we will move south and try again.

Jan's panorama for sol 3456 in circular form. Nogal's map shows the ridge we are sitting on. There is a lot of topographic distortion in this.

Quick comment about threads... we are off the Pediment now but I expect we will be back on it later (perhaps at its very southern end), so it probably makes sense to continue this thread.
