The Venus Express data archiving team has finalized plans for a hand-on workshop on the use of data from the Virtis imaging spectrometer and the Venus Monitoring Camera. Participation is limited to 20 people, and no support is provided for travel or per diem expenses.

For those who cannot attend, the exercises and other materials will be made available on the ESA Planetary Science Archive page for workshops. That page contains materials from previous Venus Express workshops and SPICE workshops, and can be found here. Most visitors to the ESAC facility stay in Madrid or San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and the site is most easily reached by car. Information on reaching the site are located here.

The announcement of the VEX Virtis/VMC workshop is below.
========================================================================

Dear Colleagues,

ESA is pleased to announce a Venus Express VIRTIS and VMC Data Workshop that will be held at ESAC (Madrid, Spain) on 21-24 October 2013.

The overall goal of the workshop is to introduce users to the Planetary Science Archive (http://archives.esac.esa.int/psa) on which data from ESA planetary missions are archived. This workshop will focus on the VIRTIS and VMC instruments of the Venus Express orbiter.

Scientific and technical lectures will be provided, as well as hands-on data processing exercises, with expert members of the VIRTIS and VMC instrument teams providing direct support on the best ways in which to calibrate and use their data for science.

This workshop will:

* Introduce the PSA and explain how to find data of interest.
* Discuss the different calibrations and corrections applied to the data, and available geometry information.
* Present tools and software available to analyse and use the data for scientific applications

with focus on:

VEx/VIRTIS (Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer) data:
- Instrument description;
- Overview of scientific goals;
- Description of calibration, geometry and data formats;
- Examples of science applications (e.g. feature tracking for wind determination in UV and IR; temperature profile retrieval from spectral inversion; nightglow spectral analysis).

VEx/VMC (Venus Monitoring Camera) data:
- Instrument description;
- Overview of scientific goals;
- Description of calibration, geometry and data formats;
- Examples of science applications (e.g. feature tracking for wind determination; search for wave features; surface temperature mapping).

The detailed content of the course is still under development, and may be changed in light of the interests of the participants.

Registration

If you are interested in attending this workshop, please register using the following link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/124nV_gXYLR...qKBN44/viewform

Deadline for registration is August 31st, 2013.

In order to ensure the right level of interaction, participation will be restricted to a limited number of participants (20). Preference will be given to PhD students and post-docs.

No charge is made for participation in the workshop, but no support for travel and subsistence costs will be provided by ESA.
