Hot off a special delivery truck from Lockheed Martin in Denver comes the aeroshell for the Mars Science Laboratory rover. Like two pieces of a giant clam, the aeroshell’s backshell and the heatshield come together to protect the rover and the propulsion stage that safely delivers it to the surface of Mars. They need shelter from extreme heat caused by friction when it descends through the Martian atmosphere during landing.
Higher Res Higher Res I know, should be link no attachments, but I am so excited. Mea culpa. -------------------- Free software for planetary science (including Cassini Image Viewer).

Rover and descent stage stacked together (the first time and only for a moment).
Now Mars Science Laboratory site is updated once a week ! progression of 'stacking' the Mars Science Laboratory rover and its descent stage -------------------- Free software for planetary science (including Cassini Image Viewer).

Wow! We should almost start thinking about this mission then! It looks almost ready to go. This is a wonderful feeling to watch as developing as a great project. Hi gang, missed you all!
I was very lucky to enjoy a tour of JPL last week - long story, will write it up later when my eyes can focus properly! - and was lucky enough to see this stunning sight whilst looking into the High Bay... Stunning sight, it really was, I almost had to be dragged away from the window! Must have been a dozen people scurrying around down there in the white bunny suits, very busy... but just a little overwhelming to think that the next time I see that huge backshell will be on images taken by HiRISE or MSL itself after it's hit the surface... Anyway, more later.... zzzzzz.... -------------------- |

No - you're not waiting patiently...you're posting on a thread, and your post may say 'patiently' - but what it means is PICTURES NOW PICTURES NOW PICTURES NOW. If you were actually being patient - we wouldn't know about it.

Actually, there aren't any more photos of MSL showing anything except the same view; the rig didn't turn at all while we were in the observation gallery, so we just saw the same side all the time. Pretty amazing view it was tho! Here's a larger version if anyone's interested...
... and a wider angle view, too... -------------------- |

...I'm gonna go with "Holy ****, it's ******* HUGE!" Wow!
Thanks for the great shots, Stu! -------------------- A few will take this knowledge and use this power of a dream realized as a force for change, an impetus for further discovery to make less ancient dreams real.

Here's a larger version if anyone's interested... Oh no, not more pictures of this wretched contraption; we've seen it all before. Yaaawwwwwwwn.... borrrrrrr-rrrrinng! As someone said on the other thread, I'll definitely be doing everything I can to make sure I avoid this "JLP" place in future. It's nothing special, anyway -- flying to another planet's really easy. Actually, I've thought of several easy ways their spaceship thingy could be improved*, but they only seem to hire deadbeats and dropouts, and never reply to my letters, no matter how carefully I crayon the address. Anyway, it's all been done before, so - nothing to see here... (In other words - the pics are great, thanks for sharing! ) (* e.g., why not add a wind turbine? Then the batteries could be recharged to stop them going flat! NB, they have to pay me royalties if they use that idea!!!one1!) -------------------- --
