I can't wait until they start releasing the PDS images for the Cassini tour. That is part of the reason I have been working with the Voyager stuff so much lately...It is hard to get motivated to do much with the "RAW" jpegs being released, since you know you will have better stuff to work with in a year. From the approach sequence, I found this nice little image of Iapetus. The original is only 98 pixels across, but super-resolution processing improved it a lot. I can't wait...

Excellent work Ted! I reckon JPL should give you early access to the PDS images, especially if you can come up with results like this. biggrin.gif

I wish rolleyes.gif I have had fun with this super-res stuff. But as I am sure you have realized, you can't do to much with these Raw JPEGs....

Here is Dione, at the same scale as the Iapetus image, taken from the best data currently on the PDS....I look forward to future releases!

Thanks. Again, that is why I have focused on working with Voyager images lately. I am trying to work with the best views that I can improve upon, such as the OGB color Enceladus mosaic I like so much.

I hope to make a page eventually with the best of these, as well as Cassini views once I have full quality data to work with (super-resolution isn't much fun if you know that even your super-res products are poorer than the original data - it becomes fun when you are pushing the data to the max). I do plan to do more with Voyager views of the Urainan satellites and Triton. But Voyager images are so hard to work with....oh for the Cassini releases....

The next PDS delivery (with data from October-December 2004) will be delivered on October 1. This would include data from Ta and Tb, the December 2004 Dione non-targeted encounter, and the Iapetus encounter.

Tedstryk:

Do you have some way to calibrate the Voyager OGB filter images in absolute terms?

This is, do you compensate for different exposure times and filter/camera response ?
I've tried this and got some very strange results (purple Triton, green enceladus). Perhaps I just got my math all wrong :-(

With Cassini we now have good reference images for Jupiter, Saturn and respective satellites.
But for Uranus and Neptune there's still only Voyager!

This is what I use to some extent.
http://pds-rings.seti.org/voyager/hardware...st_cat_wa1.html
http://pds-rings.seti.org/voyager/hardware...st_cat_wa2.html
http://pds-rings.seti.org/voyager/hardware...st_cat_na1.html

However, I find results are inconsistent...It seems that there is some sort of reciprocity breakdown in longer exposure images. I may be imagining this though.

No, you seem to be right...

Longer exposures have LESS data than they should so correcting for exposure time, filter and sensor sensivity gives very strange results.

I'm searching the net for some sort of general vidicon response vs exposure time graph but no luck so far ...

I have looked, but I have had no luck either. I have found info for film and CCDs, but not vidicon.

Yes, no information other than it has a "logarithmic response". mad.gif
