Now this is a really nit-picky point but, is the DD in the movie going the right direction? It's shown going north or east; I thought they usually went more or less the other way. I could be wrong - perhaps they can go whichever way they want to. Anyway, great movie, Astro0.

I just posted up an update to my dust devil page.

Sol 1204 was a lucky movie, catching a tall dust devil showing fine structure right from the start of the movie (when frames are the quickest).

Sol 1215 shows another tall dust devil, this one heading straight in towards Spirit (although it does appear to grow more diffuse as it comes...it might not have made it all the way to the hills).

Sol 1217 is a bit different. The fourth frame shows a diffuse 'ghost' of a dust devil passing by on the left side of the frame. It could just be one that was very nearby, or it could just be a disorganized shell of a dust devil blowing by. It reminded me of the close pass in front of the rover we saw back on Sol 568.

The sol 1215 and 1217 movies might still have more frames coming down.

Even though the '07 dust devil season didn't yield a large number of impressive new navcam movies, it was still a very active year. MRO's CTX PDS archive has thorough coverage of Gusev Crater through the entire season, showing some very dramatic changes.

Here is a cropped animation of 3 CTX images (roughly calibrated, then stretched) showing changes from December 12, 2006 (Spirit sol 1045) through May 27, 2007 (Spirit sol 1207, slightly before beginning of the dust storm). The third image actually captured an active dust devil slightly to the east of the south edge of the Columbia Hills!

High res (2x downsampled from CTX original)

P05_003122_1653_XI_14S184W.IMG

The 3 images above barely scratch the surface of what's available. There are 11 or so images taken in only 6 months time that cover that area. Stay tuned...

Wow! Beautiful work.

It amazing to see how the track pattern changes as the season progresses, and to watch how some of the initial tracks get wiped out.
(Like that one in the top right.)

I think I stared at the animation mesmerized for a good ten minutes.

Thank you for posting this!

Ditto, Juramike. I was mesmerized, too. I'm staying tuned.

Slinted-Your MRO animation is superb, magnefique.
The images seem to indicate the presence of local monsoonal winds.
i.e the 2nd image shows the DD trails oriented toward NE.
The 3rd image shows all the DD trails suddenly oriented toward SE.

Great work slinted! smile.gif
On the May27 image, to the west of the hills, near the bottom of the image in a crater, what is that? a huge DD caught in action? Or is it an artifact?

EDITED: A DD I guess, it has some shadow associated...beautiful work!

(more staring at animation)

Interesting how tracks seem to cross the northern hills, and some craters. But they don't seem to cross the larger hills.

Don't know if dust devils are disrupted by the higher terrain, or if the higher terrain landscape doesn't show tracks.
