Pluto's interacting surface and atmosphere Dr. Leslie Young - New Horizons Science Team SETI Talk sept. 2016 : https://youtu.be/srEmXQJoln8 Description: Pluto's main atmospheric species, N2, is also frozen on its surface, as are its minor atmospheric species, CH4 and CO. The New Horizons spacecraft found complicated and intriguing evidence for a dynamically interacting surface and atmosphere. The REX instrument shows a planetary boundary layer that depends on whether there's N2 ice available to sublimate. Altitude appears to be a factor in the distribution of both N2 and CH4 ice, with N2 favoring lower altitudes (higher pressures, so higher condensation temperatures), whereas some high ridges are coated in CH4 frost. Sublimation may be responsible for some of the stranger geologic forms on Pluto. Finally, preserved landforms may point to earlier ages with more widespread volatile ice coverage or higher surface pressures. Dr. Young will talk about the evidence, and some of the ways New Horizons is influencing how we think about Pluto's atmosphere and surface. . |

Icy volcanoes may dot Pluto's surface New Horizons mission spots a pair of mountains with deep pits at their centres. Must be those stratovolcanos mentioned in one of the abstracts. That's funny , I've asked NH's Hall Weaver the same question last month THIS was his answer. (he was honest ) |

Right... but it's very poor for mapping, with an off-vertical view which produces severe relief distortions ...... Phil I am using /ESP_029746_1755_COLOR.JP2, not sure if there is a more recent version. Yes, for mapping ESP_029746_1755 is better Thanks |

This is an overview of the whole route to date, and the last time I will post the upper map. From now on I will post close-ups where necessary, and this overview with a 100 m grid very occasionally. An intermediate scale will be posted more frequently when we are not in a close-up location. Phil Great maps (again) Love the closeups & rover tracks on it... Can i aks what HiRISE images you used for it lately? |

No its not the normal origins story but when seeing your Mount panorama & looking around in the Crater with the Google Crater extention to me it looks like Gale is not made bij water/mud filling but by lava/water mixing. Looking at Mount S. i think to see the layering & 3 old calderas from an central Sheeld Vulcano with big lava (& water) flows Some examples (starting north, anti clockwise) |
