"Not available in your country." A video from BBCWorldwide. Ok then. Here is the CNN coverage of the Neptune encounter with Lou Waters and Carl Sagan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y11CVuxfvPE |

From the flyby simulation high res picks of the heart area's interface with the other terrain will in itself be scientifically interesting... True, it will be about the best that can be targeted, given the conditions. In fact, it will be pretty darn good. Here is a cut-and-paste of Bjorn's latest map and VP's Celestia projections from 11 July: --Bill -------------------- |

Looks like the high res imagery should be just about perfect for understanding the major areas on Pluto. Nice to see the dice some up so nicely!

Why ? Since Pluto and Charon are tidally locked, the barycentre is always on the straight line between the two and always stays at the same place relative to Pluto and Charon. on the subject of tidal lock, say that there is some sort of evaporation/condensation (if there are lakes) or sublimation/condensation cycle. This implies seasonal mass redistribution around Pluto, so that would(?) act to move the system away from ``perfect'' lock. If the relaxation time ie the time needed to recover the lock by energy dissipation is much longer than the period of the tide, then the system would always be near, but not exactly, perfect tidal lock. I wonder how much internal heat would be generated in this case. Of course, I may have missed something obvious and this is all rubbish. |

Here is a cut-and-paste of Bjorn's latest map and VP's Celestia projections from 11 July: --Bill I don't think the heart feature we'll be featureless or uniform in appearance, anyway. There are some hints at surface variation in the images from last week, but very close to the noise limit. The latest image also hints at such variation there indirectly - the zig-zag feature on the western limb in the latest image is cutting into the easternmost limb or border area of the heart. So I think it might be quite varied, actually. -------------------- |

NASA TV pre-flyby briefing in approx. 30 min, so it's a good time to start the near encounter discussion. Please redirect to this thread. Thanks!
