Deadline to submit your name to be put on the Phoenix lander is February 1, 2007

I'm thrilled to see "Visions of Mars" fly again; I remember looking forward to it being on the Mars '96 spacecraft. Then again, I like time capsules in general.

The Planetary Society extended the deadline to February 6. Almost 156,000 names submitted so far mars.gif

I just submitted my name and got certificate number 1.16 million something. If I interpret the number, that is almost 1 million names that got added in the last 24 hours.

I think the first digit is '1' for everybody so thats only really 0.16 million. wink.gif

The Planetary Society started these participation certificates at 1000000 (The 'Wish Upon The Moon' campaign for SELENE is the same way). 161,000 names have actually been submitted...which is obviously still a lot, don't get me wrong!

For Stardust and the Mars Rovers, on the other hand, 1 million and 4 million names were submitted, respectively. wink.gif

Don't forget, though, we had years to collect names for the MER DVD. For this one we only had a few months.

I read that the MER names include those submitted for Mars Polar Lander and the 2001 Surveyor. Must've been a drag for those people to wait a couple more years to see their names fly. Hope the JPL folks are getting close to finding a landing site for Phoenix

For those that like cheating - I rather cheakily added "The members of UnmannedSpaceflight.com" whilst adding friends and family smile.gif

...and komapsumnida! smile.gif Very nice, Doug; now UMSF will be in future history books (well, undoubtedly the electronic equivalents thereof) for sure!

Don't forget about having UMSF on the moon

The Planetary Society posted up an article and a pic of the Phoenix DVD...now onboard the spacecraft in Florida:

I truly love how, printed on the face of the CD (which contains my name as well, BTW):

"Astronauts: Take This With You!"

My nine year old son asked me where on the lander the DVD is positioned. Any ideas or pics ?

Also, will the DVD be in a position to be imaged by the Phoenix cameras once on the Martian surface?

Cheers

Brian

Yes - very visible from the cameras....

http://www.planetary.org/programs/projects/messages/20070523.html details it a little more - the location is on the edge of the top of the lander deck - I think roughly where the sundial is shown here - http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/images/gallery/lg_72.jpg
