Oh, I am sure NH will spot smaller details on the other hemisphere. But it seems to lack the large scale chaos terrain this hemisphere does.

And that is the dynamic stuff the public likes. Why else are textbooks full of photos of Venus in Infrared?

I'm very looking forward to seeing high resolution views of the brightest region.
I still cannot figure that out.

I suspect that the other side may be as chaotic as this one, but for the key difference that the other side has some bright-on-bright features north of the Whale that are quite similar to the bright-on-dark features we see here, and bright-on-bright doesn't pop out so clearly to the eye.

Pluto is now (only just) the brightest object in New Horizon's sky. It just overtook Sirius in terms of brightness.

It is interesting that Pluto seems to be two faced like our moon. The chaos terrain mostly occupies the hemisphere facing Charon.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet. New Horizons will be mostly imaging the far side at closest approach. The media seems calling this hemisphere the "far side" instead of the near side because of New Horizon's trajectory. They need to use the right definitions!

My argument was basically that the resolution was probably too low for such terrain (should it exist there) to be visible when we imaged the closest-approach hemisphere. smile.gif

Only 3 million km now.

That latest image, wow! The terrain looks so different from anything we've seen before. The only thing we can say for sure is that the north pole is smooth (mottled?). A thin layer of frost or modified terrain similar to Mars? I can't wait!

Those faces of Pluto make me wonder about the regions of Triton Voyager couldn't image.

We should still get a good look at angular terrain (T shaped intersection) at the SW edge of the Heart (E edge of Whale) at pretty high resolution. This seems like a reasonable analogue on a smaller scale to the chaotic 4 dark spots we see today.

New image of Charon from 11.7.2015 (4:10:35 UTC).
It's only one image so I applied few denoising functions to (at least partially) remove compression artifacts.
Result is 3× enlarged.

Are these the best shots we'll get of this hemisphere (dark spots), or will the shots taken as it departs the Pluto encounter be better?
