Well, there's lights ! Near the horizon...
Heatshield ? Lander ? Backshell w/parachute ? Bad pixels ? On your marks ! http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/pa...OTP2291L7M1.JPG (center left) http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/pa...OTP2291L7M1.JPG (center left and at right) |

Looks like it's exactly the same pixel in both images, so I'd guess it's a hot pixel

Are we talking Spirit's heatshield here or getting confused with Oppy's? Didn't Spirit's heatshield end up partly inside/on the rim of Bonneville crater?

alan, I think you are right!!!
In the following enhanced color version, the heat shiel appear really on the Bonneville rim; probably we didn't see before due to lighting conditions. I made some angle calculation and the parachute match with the other bright spot... lander possible identification is less sure. Congratulations! -------------------- - Marco -

And here's a 5x Philovision crop of alan's image:

How much billowing around would the parachute be doing in the wind/DDs? If the wind strong enough to rock the rover, would it be strong enough to lift the chute?
That would be quite a picture if it's possible - a lucky DD with the parachute flying around in it -------------------- --O'Dave

I'd have thought the 'chute would almost certainly be flapping around a little

I made the following comparison between simulated view (assuming 90m height above the plain) and real one... red arrow indicate the calculated lander position (not yet visible...).
Maybe the green arrow do not show the parachute but the backshell (initially they were only 20m apart). The parachute now could be hundred meters far away, probably in the south direction (the prevailing wind direction, based on DD movies). Do someone want to find it? -------------------- - Marco -

The parachute and the backshell were, and remain firmly attached to one another.

In this case... we see the parachute!
