speaking of which, there was an optimistic update on the mission at the SBAG meeting earlier this month: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/sbag/meetings/jul2...rnham_EPOXI.pdf

Hehe: "Spacecraft and all (non-vaporized) instruments are healthy".
And it certainly looks like the long wait for the flyby would be scientifically useful.

2020... amazing.

Given that 2005 and 2010 were the previous encounters, we can count on one in 2040 as well.

There is no basis whatsoever for such an assumption - moreover the fuel margin for 2020 is incredibly marginal, so any activity beyond that is out of the question anyway - as you would have seen if you had read page 5 of the PDF Paolo linked to.

I suspect Steve was making a joke about the progression 2005, 2010, 2020... (somewhat apt with post 1111!) maybe a wink.gif or similar would have been in order.

Yes, that.

wink.gif

More an allusion to impressive exponential longevity than a joke, per se. But alas, no, I also don't expect things to last that long.

Thread's a bit old, but here's a discussion of the problem of measuring fuel levels in spacecraft. It's surprisingly difficult.

Thank you for the update Paolo, I did read that the ISON images were not received. And that EPOXI had not been heard of on the weekly update. Now that they've found that craft is spinning out of control is grave news indeed.
Well it were a great mission that lasted longer than intended and exceeded all expectations. smile.gif

Although the press release implies an inglorious computer glitch (like Viking 1), I still privately hope Deep Impact went out with one more bang.... more poetic.
