Phoenix Hits Mars Jackpot mars.gif in October 2008 Spaceflight magazine
by Ken Kremer
First 30 Sols:
thats the title of my new 10 page article on p. 376-385. Features 5 Phoenix mosaics created by the team of Marco Di Lorenzo and Ken Kremer in the first few weeks of the mission in June 08, several are exclusives to Spaceflight. It takes a few months to appear in print. I have included comments from many team members and cited contributions from the international science collaborators. PLus plenty of Phoenix team images too

The article describes the major events and results from landing to Sol 30, science instruments and also features my exclusive interview with Rob Manning on the story behind the historic Heimdall crater image and initial flight operations at SOC UA.
Our 5 mosaics are:
- Phoenix and the Snow Queen: (RAC) also published on cover of June 9 Aviation Week MAGAZINE and Jun 12, 2008 APOD
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080612.html
- Lander Deck Mosaic: alternate versions also in 7 July & 11 Aug 2008 AWST
- Holy Cow Mosaic (RAC)
- TEGA Mosaic (RAC)
- Heimdall Crater in Color

We are updating the mosaics as the mission progresses

PARTING SHOT
Science News Caption: This week, scientists officially bid adieu to the Phoenix Mars Lander, which has been working as a robotic geologist and searching for evidence of life-friendly environments since its May 25 landing on the Martian northern plain. Above is a lander photograph of patches of what, thanks to data the lander collected, was shown to be water ice just below the soil surface.Credit: Marco Di Lorenzo, Kenneth Kremer, Phoenix Mission, NASA, JPL, UA, Max Planck Inst.
