Any ideas on what we're seeing here?
I'm guessing internal reflections in the instrument (Charon can't be that bright). http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Encounte...mgType=approved |

Extremely long exposure of a narrow illuminated crescent of each body, probably looking for rings around Pluto. Probably! The long buildup of signal in the crescent pixels results in the bleed out across the image.

ADMIN NOTE: Moved Charon posts to the Charon Surface Observations thread, moved new Nix image to the Pluto Small Moons thread.

Thanks, everyone, for posting the MVIC images, including the satellite pics that were moved to other threads.
I knew the goods were out there somewhere. |

James Tuttle Keane @jtuttlekeane
Jeff Moore- bladed terrain on Pluto: only found at >2km elevation—where CH4 prefers to condense. #AGU16 Bill McKinnon- Pluto should have remnant rotational bulge (from when P~40 hrs) as a result of tidal de-spinning. No detection yet. #AGU16 John Spencer- altitude is an important control of color at the poles of Pluto. Relatedly, geomorphic evidence for katabatic winds? #AGU16 Brandon Johnson @brcjohns - topography and (inferred) gravity anomaly of Sputnik Planitia is best matched if Pluto has thick ocean. #AGU16 Oliver White- change in morphology across Sputnik Planitia: differential N2 sublimation/deposition, convection, and/or glacial flow? #AGU16 Go to https://twitter.com/jtuttlekeane to see his drawings |

Bladed terrain on Pluto appears to be ice towers and ice ridges that jut up a third of a mile....

Roman, that is really breath taking. The color, shadow and haze all combined are really fantastic. Thanks for the work you present here.
