Hey all,
I wanted to thank the John Spencer, the New Horizons team and the gang here at UMSF for the spectacular flyby last year. With all of your permissions, I created this humble poster to showcase the work we did here at UMSF. I sent three copies to Alan Stern, for a surprise gift to John Spencer and the New Horizons team.

There is a bit of intent to how the poster was designed. I wanted something that could visually show the contributions UMSF can make (hint hint ESA), as well as a timeline of the photos from New Horizons that were processed here. The timeline starts in the top left with Bjorn's Jupiter comparison, and spirals clockwise around in order of posting. I tried to include as many pictures from as many contributors as possible.

The best location I've found to order it so far is largeformatposters.com Their high gloss posters are available in large sizes, and are much better than www.kodakgallery.com, with no trimming of the edges, higher contrast, and better details. The poster looks exactly like the file on my monitor. The file is 300 dpi, and makes a beautiful 16"x20" poster, and can probably go larger. I have ordered a print from CafePress, but it's a week behind schedule in arriving here.

Here are two versions for a 1280x1024 desktop. I like the vertical version better, because it keeps the left side clean where the icons reside.



I want to thank Doug and Emily for their suggestions and words of encouragement, and Alan for granting permission to use the New Horizons logo, and of course John for the opportunity to participate.

We are all so fortunate to live in such a golden age of space exploration.

When I made a little forum to talk about mosaics from MER imagery, I couldn't imagine where it would end up. For someone to post on that forum a suggestion for an image to be taken by a little spacecraft flying past Jupiter, and for that image to be taken - it's an extraordinary testament to the true spirit of exploration that we share here, and are fortunate enough to some of those involved in these robotic adventures taking place around the solar system.

To put it another way - I saw that MVIC image of Europa and Io and said "Now that, is ****ing cool"

John Spencer asked on UMSF for Kodak moment suggestions on the Jupiter flyby, and hendric came up with a number of times and aimpoints. Some of the suggestions were implemented, and the results were wow, Wow, WOW!

I did some digging and found that thread. The remarkable thing about that whole sequence is that hendric posted within 8 hours of John's initial request. Great work! And what an opportunity!

Absolutely stunning hendric, wonderful work. And a fitting tribute to a truly historic event. Well done to everyone included on the poster. There are some amazingly skilled imagemages here... Can't wait to see what everyone does with the Phoenix images! (68 days and counting...! Anyone else feeling that pre-MER landing first stirring of butterflies in their stomachs..? )

Don't start me! And don't awake the ghoul! It's a long time since Mars Polar Lander got eaten (December 1999!!) and I've always wanted to see Martian "high latitudes" up close and personal.

Hendric, I'm watching Passport to Pluto as I write this, and they just showed your Kodak moments. Brilliant work, man, just stunning!!!

The sheer genius and talent of so many UMSF members never fails to astound. I'm damn proud and grateful that you guys let me hang out with you here!

To be fair, not much of my work seen here is anything special, others did way cooler things like mosaicking and color composites

Anyone interested in a full size file can e-mail me at richardhendricks at yahoo dot com, and I'll send you the raw 4800x6000 2.7MB JPEG.

I did finally receive the copy I ordered from CafePress, and it isn't quite as bad as the Kodak Gallery print, but it still doesn't match the one from largeformatposters.com. The full bleed was a little off, with a slight red line on the top and right side, and the colors were slightly off as well, with the B&W photos coming out with a tan tint, and a little too much red overall. It's only $3 more for largeformatposters.com, and it was perfect when it came in. I'm going to order a 32"x40" from them.

I am quite surprised you said that! Your composite of the red plume with the hotspot located in the middle of the caldera really struck me as a cool picture. Plus it gives some character to the bottom row of the poster.

Actually though, to be a little serious, I think every picture adds a unique perspective, and if I could have fit every one from all the threads, I would have. It's my hope that by doing things like this, we as a community (UMSF) can be taken a little more seriously by the PIs, engineers, PR, what-have-you as a resource instead of an annoyance. I feel like we're really starting to see some changes in space explaination (for lack of a better term) because of UMSF (and the internet in general), but that there could be so much more. For example, I'd love it if all you Europeans forwarded this poster to ESA and commented "I did this" or "Our community on the internet did these with the raws released by the NH team, where are our raws from European missions?" or "This is why giving a raw immediately is better than waiting for a PDS release" or "Just give us the raws, and we'll drum up free APOD/TPS/etc publicity for your mission" etc. The normal astronomy community is starting to take advantage of amateurs, why not the space exploration community? I doubt we'll ever see a mission where UMSF.com handles all it's E/PO and press releases, but you never know.


My one regret on the poster was that I couldn't include the movies made by Our Esteemed Leader; it's ironic there aren't any djellison's on the poster!

Wonderful work... reminds me of Bjorn Jonsson's comparison photo which showed Jupiter as seen by 6 spacecraft ( Pioneer 10 & 11, Voyager 1& 2, Cassini and New Horizons)
