Let's Phoenix and/or MSL find life present or ancient ... and you'll see that we'll be there earlier than you imagine now Yep, that's what I'm pinning my hopes on now, that one of our in-the-not-too-distant-future rovers or landers finds wee martian critters and that kick-starts a manned program. But there are so many variables in that future equation, so many unknowns, so many pressures coming from so many sides... Anyway, onwards and upwards eh? -------------------- |

I felt what it must be like to be one of a race of gods. My life has been downhill, pretty much, from that time on... *sigh*... -the other Doug "To speak without fear, human beings are above the gods of heaven, or at least their equal - for the gods will never pass their celestial boundaries and descend to Earth, but a man may ascend to heaven, and what is more, he may do so without leaving Earth," The Hermetica, the Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs, Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy My first contact with any kind of space program was the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975. I was 5 and still have the pic from the paper, that I drew my spaceship on ( Scan ). I think we still live in a world that is discovering the moon landings. It's easy to think it's all been forgotten, what with hoax accusations and the cynicism. It's such a huge act on such a massive canvas that it reminds me of the Voyager episode "In the Blink of An Eye". I just loaded the new Midnight Mars Browser yesterday, that has a new 3D MER mode, complete with a model of the rover from which you can pan around the environment. Almost "telepresence", although not live telepresence of course. So, actually the experience that the Armchair astronaut was seeking in the early seventies is actually very good, we just don't have many astronauts up there. mouseonmars -------------------- |

grins at Phil... "RLCs (Ranger lunar charts)"... I got a few of the ACIC charts, as I could afford them... and the Ranger 9 chart set.. had them on my college dorm room door. ... I looked and looked at them, and recognized instinctively except for the first and last maps.. the terrain was self-similar at all intermediate scales... I recognized them as a fractal, without knowing what a fractal was, maybe before Mandelbrot invented the term.

Interesting.
I wonder if this was inspired by the only real-life story I can recall of an insectoid hitchhiker on a manned spaceflight? During the ASTP mission, the Apollo crew discovered a Florida mosquito flying around inside the Docking Module when they opened it up to check it out. -the other Doug -------------------- “The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right.” -Mark Twain

I just scored tickets this morning for a November 13 lecture at the National Air & Space Museum on Nov 13 - the Apollo 8 crew is getting together for a discussion celebrating the 40th anniversary of their mission (albeit a month early).
