Hi, this is Daniel Limonadi and this is the Flight Director report for Opportunity and Spirit on Mars.

On sol 165 Spirit just finished repositioning for IDD operations or instrument arm operations on a rock called ‘Pot of Gold’. They got within close distance of the rock but not quite to where they wanted to, so sol 166 the plan will be to finish approaching that rock. The challenge right now that Spirit is taking is a significant slope spot, 15 to 20 degree tilts on the approach to this rock, so it’s hard to predict exactly where the rover is gonna end up and it’s hard to get the instrument arm within range of the targetrock.

For MER-B, Opportunity, it is sol 145 and we just finished some RAT-ting operations, finished a four millimeter RAT hole. And that was the second hole done with only a then Newton, or about two and a half pound preload. We asked to do this low preloads because of the also 20 degree, 23 degree tilt the rover’s at inside Endurance crater. It’s nice to see that we can actually get decent depths on the RAT holes so that our scientists can do good insitu analysis with the rest of the instruments on the arm. So, we’re happy with those results and Opportunity will basicly finish the next few sols doing continued IDD operations on the stratigraphic unit that’s in front of the rover, so we’re gonna finish IDD operations where we are right now, drill another RAT hole further down the hill a little bit and do Mossbauer and APXS operations down there.

So, that’s the Flight Director report for Spirit and Opportunity and we’ll see you next time.
