I won't claim to be an expert like tdemko, but all geologists have studied sedimentary structures to some degree, and these things are surely ripples. It seems that they are either being eroded, or being covered by a new layer of sand. Ripples formed in water or wind can sometimes have very similar shapes.

Ripples formed in water do sometimes have shapes similar to these, as can be seen in these earthly examples:

http://www-geology.ucdavis.edu/~GEL109/Sed...RipplesMod1.jpg
http://www-geology.ucdavis.edu/~GEL109/Sed...RipplesMod2.jpg

It was harder to find some good pictures, but wind formed ripples can also have similar shapes:

Looks like there was a small problem with positioning the right pancam filter wheel on sol 867, it's a little out of sync.

Most noticeable in this one (arc across the top) but it is visible in all the R pancams taken on sol 867

Not the first time - looks like the thermal model didn't allow for quite enough time to heat the filter wheel before using it. We talked about it in a Pancam update some time ago smile.gif

Remember this similar problem before, but it was on shots taken quite early in the morning.

It's also a problem that worsens itself..

Winter = Cold
Winter = Not much solar power
Not much solar power = no much science in the day
Not much science = instruments not used much
Instruments not used much = cold instruments
cold instruments + winter = very cold instruments
very cold instruments require lots of heating power
Not much solar power....

etc etc etc

Am I right in thinking this is only an issue because the rovers have greatly outlasted their design life? Now that we know they can last for years presumably the next generation will be designed to cope easily with winter - and higher latitudes?

If they had more power, they could be more flamboyant with heating the filter wheel before using it. Having so little power, they try to power heaters as little as the thermal model suggests they need to to get proper operation - and sometimes they end up a little bit short. I'll double check with JB, but I'm guessing that's what happened this time around.

One can only hope there will be a next generation, but there is nothing lightweight and redundant like MER on the drawing board. Phoenix Lander will be at the poles using solar panels so winter will probably kill it off quickly. The all-eggs-in-one-basket MSL will have RTGs to keep everything nice and warm, but its using a sort of dicey landing system so im not holding my breath... not yet anyway. i'm waxing glum here, but with all the budget slashing adn probably more to come next year, MER might just be the last successful rover on the ground for a decade.

Rats. sad.gif Doesn't work for me. I'm seeing double.

On second try: It works if I don't enlarge the hi-res image. Nice, but I'll never understand anaglyphs.

LOL... I suspected right away that not everyone would appreciate the anaglyph aspect of it, because the way people perceive anaglyphs seems to be wildly variable. Never-the-less, from my POV that may be the single best anaglyph I've seen from the whole mission. Well done, James!

Thanks Michael. smile.gif

I do find it a little tricky to view sometimes as your eyes have to focus on the near screen but the pointing of your eyes needs to be different (more parallel) than normal. What works for me is to look at a largeish rock in the middle distance and then let your eyes defocus a bit and wait for it to come. And as Shaka says it is easier with a smaller version.

I may do a version without the near field and align the feaures closer together which should make things easier, and allow higher res versions to work smile.gif (for some of us wink.gif)

Pancam anaglyphs often give me trouble, probably because the cameras are set so far apart. I've found that moving my head side to side sometimes helps me see the 3-D effect. If that doesn't work I try using the scroll bar to move the image side to side.
