Coooool!!!

I did some spotting of features from yesterday's images, and looks like some orbital features of the inner basin are now visible on the images taken by the rover.

Wow, what's really cool about the 3d image is that you can actually see the undulations of the ground between West Spur and Lookout Point, that show up like lighter-colored stripes or dunes in the satellite image. In 2d they are impossible to detect.

That'll be quite a view at the Lookout Point once Spirit gets there...

I'm just amazed at that basin. It's been the type of view I've been waiting for but I want more. I'm just so surprised JPL hasn't put this sequence of images out yet. I'm hoping it's because they're feverishly doing image processing creating the full panoramas before releasing them to the stunned public. It's funny but the pictures sent back a day later don't contain any views of this depression. The rover must have advanced behind some ridges that prevent the view. Let's hope they're going to climb those ridges and take a full panorama.

What's cool, though, is that Spirit now has a clear view of, and in what looks like a fairly accessible place, some real Gusev Bedrock™.

Except that this image was taken by tilting the camera up considerably. It's unlikely that the rover can reach this outcrop...

Actually, I disagree. I think this outcrop is in the foothills. If the camera was looking straight up, then you wouldn't be able to see another small hill behind it. I think this outcrop is found by looking at the foothills towards the south. Compare with this image, taken by the navcam on the same day:

If you look in the top right-hand corner, you'll see a place where one hill comes down in front of another. I think that's where Spirit was looking, and where it might be headed.

But I've been known to be wrong before... wink.gif

This particular outcrop has been in view for weeks when approaching the hills. I think JPL has at least partly aimed for it, as it is such a visible feature. Unfortunately it is quite high up the hill, and I don't think Spirit will be traversing that slope.

Here is a pancam shot of it from sol 150:
