QUOTE (fredk @ Mar 7 2014, 10:29 AM) *
We see these rim sequences periodically. I believe they are DD searches. In fact the only (as far as I recall) DD seen by MSL was spotted in such a sequence - see this and following posts.
fascinating thanks so much for resurfacing that old thread (I must have been somewhere else in space and missed it). that candidate DD seems to have a structure to suggest its as energetic as the Gusev species, there must be little liftable dust in Gale left over to kick around, maybe DDs are common but more visible in infrared..
..on another note some surprisingly deep terrain to the right of the ramp

People generally think the vortices are going by frequently but don't pick up much dust. At the MER and Phoenix sites the existence of DDs was suggested by lots of tracks on the ground in orbital images. but here at Gale there aren't any tracks in orbital images, and practically none seen from the ground.

I roughly extended Damia's pan and made a circular version to locate the rover in the valley.

Chemcam imaged a screw head on Sol-564, so just to save some time locating it, here is where it is. Its located on the Turret.

What I've been told is fractured bedrock underneath. The lines correspond to the fractures.

Sol 565 Navcam x-eye stereo, and anaglyph:

Camera bearing has been about 150 degrees. Next waypoint still seems to be (mostly?) hidden.
