Many (but not all) of the images from perijove 27 are now available. This is image PJ27_36 in approximately true color/contrast and enhanced versions:




North is to the left in the last two images but in the other images north is up.

An interesting feature in the last image is the long, narrow and slightly wavy red band running from upper right down to the bottom of the image a bit left of center (it is also visible in the true color/contrast version but it's not as conspicuous there). The visual impression is that this is transparent, reddish haze and that the clouds below the haze band can be seen through the haze. It will be interesting to see what's happening farther west (down in the image) but the images showing this are not yet available at the time of this writing.

The enhanced images are a bit experimental. Compared to what I usually do, I'm using a somewhat different method to increase the contrast and exaggerate color differences. Also I'm now using DeNoise AI from Topaz Labs to reduce noise and sharpen the images. This is an awesome tool in most cases but one must be careful not to overprocess the images. There are also some 'types' of images where it doesn't work well - I tried using it to process a very noisy grayscale Galileo image of Europa with horrible results. But I've been getting great results so far with the JunoCam images - far better than in e.g. Photoshop.

Just so everyone is aware (I don't remember if we've ever explained this): we process and post the images pretty much as soon as we get them in complete form. Depending on downlink pass quality, we can end up with partial images that have dropped data in them, and these gaps have to be filled in by commanding their retransmission. Usually this process doesn't happen on weekends, but you can expect most or all of these images to show up in the next few days.

For PJ27, there are some nice views of the GRS on the outbound leg to look forward to.

Mike, was flight software doing anything "special" for PJ27_40 (Io on limb image)?
The start time offset my limb matching came up for this would be the largest I've seen in the mission.
(However, this offset is preliminary since I don't have reconstructed SPK yet, but
other offsets didn't seem excessive.)

No, nothing special that I know of. We haven't done our timing analysis yet.

I figure someone must have planned it. If I did my web-geo-calc-ing correct,
the event was only 22.44 seconds, 2020-06-02 10:52:50.482537 to 2020-06-02 10:53:12.918912

This is from image PJ27_40, enlarged by a factor of 4 relative to the original data. Approximately true color/contrast. Io's limb required special processing since Io was very slightly farther from Jupiter's limb when the blue data was obtained than it was when the red data was obtained. The same applied to the green data but the difference was of course smaller. North is down.



Like Brian I saw an unusually big START_TIME offset/error in this particular image. At first I didn't believe it and recomputed/rechecked everything but got the same result.

This is a map-projected mosaic of four methane filter images at 30 pixels/degree:



The original images are noisy and contain various artifacts. Here the most conspicuous artifacts have been removed. Many artifacts remain though, in particular many narrow, dark and bright lines. In the white areas no useful data was available.
