Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Conferences and Broadcasts _ Design Celebrates 23 Historic Missions

Posted by: mgrodzki Aug 17 2010, 03:44 PM

I have been at this for a month and I think this is the final art. 23 selected missions outside of Earth orbit. I intend to sell this as a tee on chopshopstore.com and donate 20% of profits to The Planetary Society. We do pretty well with this kind of design having already successfully sold many copies of our robots, aliens, monsters, rock stars… etc. I always wanted to do one based on planetary exploration just for my own satisfaction, but I think people will buy this as well.

Coincidentally, we are helping Radiolab raise funds by selling some designs and that audience is likely to also like the space mission design.

Let me know what you think and if there are any omissions that beg revision. Keep in mind that the design makes it very difficult to move things around. But if a number of you think I REALLY need to drop a Venera for Magellan… I can probably do that.

Wow! Post the link to the shirt when it is done (if that is allowed in the forum rules) - I want one! smile.gif

i was hoping that would be the reaction. I always find a lack of nicely designed space merch whenever I look, so… I figure why not just make my own.

I might also make a poster version with an expanded number of included missions. Can't easily add more to the tshirt space.

Definitely want the shirt!!!

I will post the link when it is up. I will likely have it go pre-order as the printer that is doing this is fantastic… Storenvy (in case anyone is thinking making tees). No way it will come out badly.

Emily suggested I add Hayabusa. So I ditched Mars Express for it. Now the only ESA thing on here I can recall would be the Huygens probe with Cassini.

Isn't there Rosetta with Philae?

yeah… left of Sojourner. I even have the small lander on there next to Rosetta.

Yes please, great shirt!

Could you post a decoder ring? I'm not up on all my silhouettes. smile.gif I can recognize the Pioneers, Voyagers, and Cassini on the outside, but I don't know the one to the left of Galileo at the 11 o'clock position.

Posted by: machi Aug 19 2010, 08:13 PM

I think it's Ulysses, so that another more or less ESA mission.

Thanks! Love the design.

Posted by: nprev Aug 20 2010, 07:21 PM

Agreed; it's beyond sweet!

Looking forward to sporting it amongst the masses for puzzled looks & the occasional interested inquiry; outreach comes in many forms. wink.gif

That would make an excellent quiz!

Posted by: mgrodzki Aug 20 2010, 10:01 PM

Yes… it does. I make these kinds of designs for our tee shop and a few blogs with loyal commenters have numbered and posted them so everyone takes guesses at every robot, alien or whatever the theme is. I was too stupid to see that coming and when I saw people doing it on their own it was a pretty cool feeling. So, unlike here… I NEVER give out the answers because then people just search it online. No fun.

I did one for water access issues for a charity as well. The numbers were based on actual stats which were printed on the inside of the tee under the custom label.

I bet you'd sell a shipping containerfull of "Dr Who Monsters" t-shirts if you ever designed one... smile.gif

Posted by: mgrodzki Aug 21 2010, 12:55 AM

Maybe… but too much from any one source is trouble. If you catch my drift.

I think I have only the Dalek on the alien one.

Hey, my first exposure on The Planetary Society blog. They are running it also in the publication so I hear.

http://planetary.org/blog/article/00002671/

I made this goofball image for the tee also. That is my big dumb head in there.

Oh by the way, its available now: http://www.chopshopstore.com/product.php?productid=16299

We’re donating $5 per copy sold to the Planetary Society. I also added the ability for people to join PS for $12 less than their usual membership fee. 4 people used that to join in one day. Not too bad!

Bought shirts for everyone in the family. They look really sharp, and will make great conversation starters!

I saw that. Impressive purchase!

My shirt has been ordered! biggrin.gif

Posted by: tharrison Sep 22 2010, 03:14 PM

Bought a shirt for myself, and passed the link on to the rest of the science folks here at MSSS, so I'm sure there will be more purchases! smile.gif Love the design!

(My inner geek totally wants a shirt like this of the various ships from Star Trek...laugh.gif)

Posted by: nprev Sep 22 2010, 04:10 PM

Just ordered mine. smile.gif

Posted by: mgrodzki Sep 23 2010, 04:43 AM

Very awesome… got posted to boingboing yesterday. Already have reprints ordered.

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/21/23-great-space-missi.html

It got picked up in so many places, and they all linked liberally to The Planetary Society. So, I hope they have been seeing a notable increase in traffic as well. Boing is the holy grail of getting blog-posted. Well, maybe Oprah.

LOL, guess I am going to have to get another one. The XL I got for my wife was apparently a youth XL. Who knew? smile.gif

It wasn’t a kids… I know… crazy. Our customers largely WANT American Apparel tees. The women’s are crazy fitted small. An XL looks like a MED at best. The info can be had here: http://store.americanapparel.net/2102.html

The men’s are fitted as well, but more like an in between. A LRG will feel more like a MED/LRG. More information can be found here: http://store.americanapparel.net/2001.html

I got mine (men's XL) a few weeks back--love it!

Wore it to the hospital for my latest surgery, which resulted in a few inquiries from the medical staff about just what the hell the design was, which in turn provided an excellent opportunity for extemporaneous UMSF education... wink.gif
