Relating to Venus SAR maps.
Anyone know how to convert C1-MIDRs which were made sinusodal to cylindrical mapping?

My understanding is C1-MIDRs were made from F-BIDRs which I dont think you can find online to work with.
Mapaplanet uses FMAPs which I have discovered surprisingly arent always the most complete.
The software including on the CDs for FMAPs converts from Sinusodal to Cylindrical but doesnt work with C1-MIDRs.
(Siravans newmap.exe version didnt work either)

the example of my problem is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sacajawe...ra_PIA00485.jpg
this is C1-MIDR of sacajawea patera in sinusodal which I would need converted to cylindrical. It is a nice complete image of the area.
If I try to use mapaplanet.org, both cylindrical and sinusodal results shows this area with big black bar next to sacajawea indicating missing areas as well as some visual manglement in the cylindrical version which I dont like or want. This is what leads me to believe Mapaplanet isnt as perfect a program as I would like.

Anyone know how to convert C1-MIDRs which were made sinusodal to cylindrical mapping?

Thanks

I would still recommend using mapaplanet. The reason you may see large black areas is that there were three cycles of Venus mapping -- cycle 1 covered most of the planet with some data gaps at a left-looking geometry; cycle 2 covered most of the remaining areas at a similar look angle; and cycle 3 covered select areas at the opposite look angle, for stereo. In many (but not all) cases, gaps in cycle 1 can be filled by mosaicking it with cycle 2 data. I use mapaplanet to generate images of my area of interest using cycle 1 data and if there are gaps I ask it to produce the same area using cycle 2 data, and I combine them in Photoshop. In most cases that will give you complete or nearly complete coverage.

In mapaplanet
I think the sacajawea patera maybe the exception (not all) you may refer to.
When I try, it does not show up in right look or stereo look of the same region.
So I dont know how the sample
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sacajawe...ra_PIA00485.jpg
could fill in more areas.

For quick check for those who are curious. sacajawea is just to the left of max montes

Is their another cycle that has radar images that mapaplanet doesnt use from what you can tell?

yes BUT ( and it is a big but) I use ISIS3 to do that . i dose not work well on MS windows
http://isis.astrogeology.usgs.gov/index.html
Linux or Mac

on windows ( what xp vista or 7) mmps should work
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~arcus/mmps/
It dose build in blodsheds Dev-c++ on MinGW
but only on the whole map that is what 12 gig's ?

now the files you are talking about. They are these ?
http://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/data/mgn-v...1-v1.0/mg_0002/

for that ( above) the map is 168876x84438 in size (469.1 <PIXEL/DEG> )
on windows use a GIS program

a 512x512 crop of that area in simple cylindrical

Just so I understand what you did and for clarity.
The 512 sample you created was with ISIS3 and not with any content on mg_0002. With what original content were you working from for your sample?

I only have windows. I dont want to do the whole planet map, I wanted around selected framelets or groups of framelets.
And I should correct myself. I understand the C1- etc were compressed so I dont want that but the F-MIDRs (not FMAPs) which I think were uncompressed and the biggest resolution you can get.

The example of exactly what I want to do is on mg_0004 and is the f645n342 framelets collection.

So are you saying I could do those with only using a windows GIS program?

Because the resolution was going to be really big thats why I didnt want to have to work with the whole planet map if can.

thanks

that is for the map i made for celestia
it uses the left look with the right look
with missing data filed in from
http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/geo/mgn-v...1/mg_3002/gedr/
http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/geo/mgn-v.../mg_3002/gredr/
and a bit from the topo
http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/geo/mgn-v...1/mg_3002/gtdr/

there is a windows Mingw version or a win build .There is a link i need to find

but on windows as elakdawalla pointed out PDS map a planet is a good bet
or ask phil or bjorn what they use
i think it is mmps
